MLB unfortunately seems to be headed for a lockout. Players and owners are on completely different sides of the salary cap debate. There are other topics that will impact the new collective bargaining agreement discussions, but the salary cap is the most pressing issue at the moment. The MLBPA as well as MLB will continue to look for solutions, but a lockout will occur if a new deal isn’t reached by early December. Former MLB star Anthony Rizzoshared his thoughts on the topic during a recent segment of Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered.
“Look, no one wants to lose baseball,” Rizzo said. “… Baseball is in a great spot, it’s very competitive. But with this lockout, with the owners digging down and saying they’re going salary cap, I need fans to understand, forever baseball hasn’t had a salary cap. There’s so much that needs to happen in this CBA negotiation that this could drag out unfortunately longer than expected.”
Baseball would be dealt a brutal blow if games end up being missed due to the lockout. The game is indeed in a “great spot” right now as Rizzo mentioned. If the situation does end up dragging out “longer than expected” like Rizzo said, baseball will be in an especially challenging position.

MLB has worked hard to bounce back after it seemed as if the sport’s popularity was trending in the wrong direction not too long ago. The rule changes to the game such as the pitch clock and ABS challenge system have seemingly led to an increase in fan interest in the sport once again.
So, what may it take for the owners and players to put their differences aside and find a solution? Rizzo, who, again, was a star at the MLB level, admitted money could be the breaking point.
“But until there’s an actual deadline, until owners start losing money — which is not going to be for a long time into the lockout — or players start feeling it on their paychecks, things aren’t going to start moving unfortunately.”

Rizzo surely hopes he’s wrong about things potentially taking longer than anticipated to resolve, but his take should not be overlooked.
