Ensign Harry Kim has been stuck with just a single pip for over three decades since his character first entered the Star Trek universe in Voyager 31 years ago. It’s become a running joke among the community and even in the franchise itself, with Lower Decks using Kim’s failure to get promoted as an entire premise for the beloved “Fissure Quest” episode.
There’s no doubt Kim deserved a proper promotion over the years, repeatedly helping save the ship and its crew from seemingly impossible situations. Despite proving himself an invaluable member of Captain Janeway’s team, however, Kim never managed to climb the Starfleet ranks during the show’s seven-season run (aside from his brief promotion to captain in the alternate-future finale that was ultimately erased).
Even Tom Paris managed to get demoted and then re-promoted again while Kim remained stuck as an ensign. Unfortunately for Kim, it looks like the franchise has no intention of letting this long-running joke die anytime soon. A brand-new Star Trek release arriving this November has officially confirmed that Harry Kim is, you guessed it, STILL an ensign, continuing a tradition that has followed the character for more than 30 years.

Image via Paramount+Apparently, even crossing over into an entirely different franchise isn’t enough to finally earn Harry Kim a promotion, and it’s one that even features alternate versions of several beloved characters and could’ve easily featured a two-pip Kim variant. The upcoming Magic: The Gathering x Star Trek crossover did Kim dirty once again, featuring a brand-new card for the beloved Voyager character. Despite everything he’s accomplished over the past three decades, Kim is officially still an ensign in the new MTG expansion.
The new card, appropriately titled “Ensign Harry Kim, Operations,” is part of the upcoming Federation Fleet Commander deck, which features “Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary” as its main commander. The deck brings together characters from across the Star Trek universe, including Captain Janeway, Tom Paris, Seven of Nine, and several other familiar faces.
Kim’s card is a rare Legendary Creature classified as a Human Officer, requiring two mana to play. He starts with just 1 power and 2 toughness, but whenever another creature enters the battlefield under the player’s control with greater power than Kim, he receives a +1/+1 counter. Players can also spend two mana and remove two +1/+1 counters from among their creatures to draw another card.
There’s something particularly hilarious about Kim’s ability to constantly grow stronger without ever actually advancing beyond the rank of ensign. Considering his unfortunate history in Voyager, it’s an incredibly fitting addition to the crossover.

Of course, Federation Fleet is just one part of the larger Magic: The Gathering x Star Trek collaboration, which arrives as the franchise celebrates its 60th anniversary. There are four Commander decks in total, including:
Each Commander deck includes 100 playable cards, with 32 cards that are new to Magic, alongside familiar characters, iconic starships, and other references to Star Trek history. Collector’s Editions featuring special surge foil treatments will also be available.
The Magic: The Gathering x Star Trek crossover officially releases on November 13, 2026, with all four Commander decks available alongside the larger trading card collection. For Harry Kim, it’s another opportunity to shine, even if Starfleet still hasn’t given him that second pip.
