Have the Boston Celtics leaned too far into analytics?

From the moment it became clear that the Boston Celtics were shopping Jaylen Brown in trade talks, the topic of analytics in basketball became a hot discussion point. Brown came into the summer fresh off a career year, where he led the Celtics to the second seed in the Eastern Conference and was firmly in the MVP discussions for the majority of the season.

However, according to multiple advanced analytics, Brown’s on-court impact was sub-optimal compared to his salary, thus creating a divide within Boston’s fanbase as to whether Brown should be on the trade block or not. Even now, almost a month after Brown was ultimately traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, NBA fans are split as to whether the role of analytics has become too large when analyzing on-court production.

In a recent segment for 98.5 The Sports Hub, Michael Felger and Tony Massarotti discussed the role of analytics in basketball and whether it’s both ruining the league and the way players are evaluated. After all, how can it be that an MVP candidate is also seen as a low-impact player? The duo also pointed to how favorably the analytics view talents such as Payton Pritchard and Derrick White in relation to their role within Joe Mazzulla’s rotation.
