The San Francisco 49ers improved to 6-0 on Monday night with a 23-17 win over the Washington Commanders at Levi’s Stadium. Linebacker Fred Warner finished with eight tackles, but one fourth-quarter play drew scrutiny after the final whistle.
Now the league has reviewed the footage, and the result could add to a growing list of concerns for 49ers.
Fred Warner fined $65,673 after Commanders win
The NFL fined Warner $65,673 for two unnecessary roughness violations from the win over Washington, according to insider Tom Pelissero. The larger piece was a $47,762 fine for a hit on Commanders tight end Chig Okonkwo. A second fine of $17,911 covered another unnecessary roughness violation from the game.
The Okonkwo play happened in the fourth quarter on a short catch. Officials threw a flag, then picked it up, so the San Francisco 49ers avoided a 15-yard penalty.

The league can still issue fines after reviewing video, and that is what happened here. Fans questioned the call on social media, and the fine now adds fuel to the debate over Warner’s hits.

Warner finished with eight tackles in the game, while Okonkwo caught all seven of his targets for 69 yards.
The money is only part of the story. Warner has now been fined $107,466 across four violations this season, including $41,793 for two plays against Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride in Week 3. CBS Sports reports two more hits on defenseless players would bring a one-game suspension.
Warner has not been shy about what he expects from this team, and his message came right after the win.
Warner stresses progress as 49ers chase more than wins
The four-time All-Pro has not let the unbeaten start change his message. After the Commanders game, he stressed that the 49ers want more than a perfect record.
“Of course, 6-0, fantastic,” Warner said afterward. “We’re gonna still continue to chase progression. You don’t want to just be a 6-0, you want to be a team that’s on the rise.”
That mindset fits a defense that leans on him. Warner has 58 tackles and three forced fumbles through six games, per CBS Sports. San Francisco led early on Monday, but Washington cut into the margin after halftime, and the defense had to close out the win.
Washington scored 17 points, and Warner’s leadership is central to keeping that unit focused. That is why Warner’s message about the team’s expectations carries weight inside the locker room. Still, the fines add another storyline for a player the 49ers cannot afford to lose.
The 49ers sit at 6-0 and face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday before their Week 8 bye. Warner will aim to stay clean on the field, since the league is watching and another flagged hit could bring him closer to a suspension.
