HBO’s Game of Thrones, based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, performed exceptionally well at the Emmy Awards, winning a total of 59 across its eight-season run. House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which are adaptations of Martin’s Fire & Blood and Tales of Dunk and Egg, have won a combined total of three Emmys, and both have more seasons on the way. He is an executive producer of all the aforementioned series and wrote four episodes of Game of Thrones.
Martin is also an executive producer of AMC’s crime thriller series Dark Winds and presented star Zahn McClarnon with the Visionary Award at the Santa Fe International Film Festival (via MovieMaker). The Game of Thrones author spoke about how deserving McClarnon is of the award. He also emphasized that the Dark Winds star deserves more recognition and is “furious” he hasn’t received an Emmy nomination yet. Check out Martin’s comments below:
It’s wonderful that the Santa Fe International Film Festival is honoring him with the Visionary Award. He is a triple threat, director, producer, and actor, of course, and we want him to continue in all of those roles for us. Also, he needs some other awards. I’m furious that he hasn’t been nominated for an Emmy yet. Let’s get him on the Emmy ballot, and then he should win an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe.

With a 100% critics’ score, Dark Winds always gets outstanding reviews, including extensive praise for McClarnon’s performance. Nevertheless, the show has never been nominated for a single Emmy Award.
Dark Winds is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee books, following three Navajo police officers who investigate various cases in the 1970s. The main trio of characters features McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn, Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee, and Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito. Along with being generally acclaimed, the show has been lauded for its Indigenous representation, and a fifth season is slated to be released in 2027.

Michael Moriatis/©AMC/Courtesy Everett CollectionConsistently being shut out of not just winning any Emmys, but even getting nominated remains one of the biggest snubs among television awards in recent years. With season 5 on the way, there is an upcoming opportunity for this to change, especially after Martin brought further attention to the fact that McClarnon has never been nominated. Along with playing Leaphorn, the actor is also one of the show’s executive producers and directed season 4, episode 2, making him a “triple threat” as described by Martin.
As referenced by the author, Dark Winds being snubbed is not exclusive to the Emmys, as it has also never been nominated by the Golden Globes. McClarnon has previously won at the C&I Movie and TV Awards and the NAMIC Vision Awards, but the Emmys and Golden Globes remain the most prestigious and well-known when it comes to television. Outside the AMC show, McClarnon has starred in Westworld, Reservation Dogs, Hawkeye, Echo, Doctor Sleep, Longmire, Frontier, No Hard Feelings, The Son, The Forever Purge, and Queen of the South.

In addition to being an executive producer and vocal supporter of the show, Martin has an uncredited cameo in season 3, episode 1, as does Robert Redford, with this being the last role before the actor’s death, and he was an executive producer as well.
As for what to expect from Dark Winds season 5, Manuelito told ScreenRant at San Diego Comic-Con that “I’m really excited for everyone to see it because the producer said they think it’s a career performance high for me or whatever that means . . . I ended up just sending an email to the writers and thanking them for opening up a part of me that I hadn’t experienced before as a performer and a human being.”
