The Jack Reacher franchise began with the release of Killing Floor in 1997 by British author Lee Child, which began Reacher’s many tales of danger and adventure. The series now contains over 30 novels with multiple short story collections, and has since sold over 100 million copies worldwide. It was later adapted into a film series starring Tom Cruise between 2012 and 2016, and later adapted by Prime Video starring Alan Ritchson into a major streaming sensation.
Collider has revealed that after 29 years, Child has officially left the Jack Reacher series and his involvement in the writing process has officially concluded. His younger brother, Andrew Child, is now writing the novels independently. According to Child, his brother is secretive surrounding new releases, as the original author fails to see the final novel until it’s sent to publishers:
“He’s very secret, and I think that’s fair enough. When I was doing it, I hated showing anybody anything, and I generally wouldn’t, because the style that I had and that Andrew’s continued is completely improvised. There’s no plan, there’s no long-term view. You can’t say, ‘This is what it’s going to be.’ We don’t know. It’ll be what it is, and until it’s finished, I don’t really know what it is or what it’s about. I don’t like to show anybody, and he’s the same. So I just get it when the publisher gets it, and I read it out of interest.”

Child and his brother first collaborated in 2020 on the novel The Sentinel, which led to the original creator handing more and more responsibilities to his brother Andrew. With the recent release of Chain Reaction, Child has officially departed the franchise, but is still credited with creating the Jack Reacher universe. When asked about handing a character he’s spent nearly three decades with, the author opened up about saying goodbye:
“People think that’s weird, that I’ve given away this character, but the entire point of writing is to give away the character. You want the reader, first of all, to own it, and for the character to live as a reality in the reader’s mind. That’s the whole point. You want to give it away, and then you give it away to movies or television or whatever. It’s no different giving it away to a different author. Same thing exactly, because there’s a lot of fan fiction around. People writing Reacher-style fan fiction, and that’s fine too. Let them have it. Let them enjoy it.”

However, it is not all doom and gloom, as Lee isn’t completely done with the franchise entirely as he remains closely tied to the adaptations, including Prime Video’s major series Reacher. It is easily one of the most successful action franchises on the streaming platform, with season 3 generating over 54 million global views within its first 19 days, making it one of the most-watched returning seasons on Prime Video. Season 4 reached 66 million global viewers within its first 28 days.
Prime Video’s Reacher season 5 is on its way and currently in production, with season 6 already greenlit and set to adapt Child’s 20th novel Make Me. The spinoff Neagley also arrived and brought over a billion minutes viewed before being renewed for a second season. Reacher and Neagley are available to stream now on Prime Video.
