Getafe president Ángel Torres says the club’s move for Dani Carvajal has collapsed, telling El Chiringuito that the proposed deal has broken down.
“There is nothing,” Torres said when asked about the transfer on Wednesday. Pressed on whether the agreement had fallen through, he added: “Everything has broken down.”
The comments followed a confusing Tuesday in which Torres initially told DAZN that Carvajal had passed his medical and reached an agreement with Getafe. At that stage, he said the remaining step was an agreement with La Liga over the operation.
Later that day, Torres played down the prospect of a signing and said his earlier remarks had been a joke. His latest comments leave the 34-year-old without a club after a move that had appeared close to completion.
According to AS, José Bordalás had personally contacted Carvajal to explain the role he would have at Getafe. The coach wanted to strengthen the right side of his team and saw an opportunity to bring in an experienced player without paying a transfer fee.
Staying in the Madrid region also appealed to Carvajal, while Getafe would have offered him a route back into Spanish top-flight football following his summer departure from the Bernabéu.
Carvajal left Real Madrid after 13 seasons in the first team, ending an association that began when he joined the academy in 2002. He finished with more than 450 appearances and 27 trophies. His honors included six Champions League titles and four La Liga championships.
He scored the opening goal in Madrid’s 2024 Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley and won the European Championship with Spain that summer.
Other possibilities had emerged before the Getafe talks. In September, TEAMtalk reported that intermediaries had offered Carvajal to Liverpool, Manchester City and Fulham while exploring potential destinations for the free agent.
