Skip Bayless is to thank for some epic moments on ESPN and Fox over the years. However, the sports media icon is showing off a different side of himself after reuniting with one of his former co-hosts.
Meanwhile, the former Undisputed personality recently joined Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast. The two discussed a lot of fun topics, but one of the more serious conversations pertained to why Bayless and his wife Ernestine have never had children.
The conversation quickly shifted to Bayless’ childhood and the difficult relationship he had with his own father.
“I just didn’t want to repeat the cycle again,” Bayless explained to Sharpe. “I felt like maybe I would treat my kids the way he treated me, and it horrified me.”

Bayless’ candid talk with Sharpe clearly indicates some childhood trauma he endured. However, he’s been open in his career about not wanting children.
His recent Club Shay Shay appearance has slightly shifted the conversation, though, after previously giving a different reasoning behind not having kids.
Bayless previously discussed he and his wife’s choice to not pursue a family, but the 74-year-old said the decision ultimately came down to not wanting to be distracted for his work.
“I felt I was called by god to be the very best truth-telling commentator and writer I could be,” Bayless said in 2025 during The Skip Bayless Show. “I sacrificed having children because I saw that correctly raising children would be a huge, time-draining distraction from maximizing my talents.”
Bayless was out of the spotlight in recent years before recently linking back up with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN First Take. The two longtime hot take artists get together on Smith’s show every Friday after Bayless rejoined the program in September.
