ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Federal Government has disbursed N38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across Nigeria under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund to address infrastructure gaps and improve teaching and learning facilities.
The disbursement covers 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education, according to a statement issued by the Head of Media at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie, on Sunday in Abuja.
Ovuakporie said the intervention was intended to support infrastructure development and enable beneficiary institutions to address critical needs affecting their operations.
Under the allocation, universities will receive N28.5 billion, while polytechnics have been allocated N5.8 billion. Colleges of education will receive N4.7 billion.
The funding is expected to enable the institutions to commence or continue approved projects aimed at improving their facilities and addressing identified institutional challenges.
Universities Receive Largest Share
Universities account for the largest share of the disbursement, with N28.5 billion allocated to the 79 beneficiary institutions.
Polytechnics will receive N5.8 billion collectively, while N4.7 billion has been earmarked for the 41 colleges of education.
The funding distribution covers the three categories of public tertiary institutions and is intended to support improvements in educational infrastructure and the learning environment.
According to the ministry, the beneficiary institutions are expected to use the funds for approved projects addressing critical infrastructure gaps and other identified institutional needs.
However, the statement did not provide a breakdown of the amounts allocated to individual institutions or specify the projects to be executed by each beneficiary.
The ministry directed members of the public seeking further information about the beneficiary institutions and their respective allocations to visit its official website.
Funding Linked to FG-ASUU Agreement
Ovuakporie said the intervention was also designed to support the implementation of agreed measures under the Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The funding forms part of efforts to address challenges within the tertiary education system, particularly infrastructure deficiencies that affect teaching, learning and institutional operations.
Public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education require adequate facilities to support academic programmes, practical training, research and other educational activities.
The government’s intervention is expected to help beneficiary institutions advance approved projects in line with their identified needs.
The statement, however, did not provide details of the specific commitments under the agreement that the latest disbursement would address or outline a timeline for completing the funded projects.
Ministry Emphasises Effective Use of Funds
The Federal Ministry of Finance stressed the importance of coordination among relevant government agencies and beneficiary institutions to ensure that the disbursement produces measurable improvements.
Ovuakporie said effective coordination would be essential to translating the funding into tangible gains in educational infrastructure.
The implementation of the approved projects will therefore be important in determining how the intervention addresses the infrastructure challenges identified by the institutions.
The ministry advised members of the public seeking details of the beneficiaries and their allocations to visit www.finance.gov.ng.
The N38.93 billion disbursement provides funding for 166 public tertiary institutions, with universities receiving the largest collective allocation. The extent of the intervention’s impact will depend on how effectively the beneficiary institutions deploy the funds and complete their approved projects.
