James Gunn's First Major Superman Crossover Is The Fix The DCU Needs

James Gunn’s upcoming Superman crossover feels like it will be the perfect thing for the DCU and some of its biggest criticisms. With only three movies and a handful of shows to its name thus far, the new DC Universe, overseen by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, is still in its early stages. However, that hasn’t stopped many online from voicing their concerns about its overall cohesion.

For the time being, the various projects of the DCU have felt fairly isolated from one another, with only a few pieces of connective tissue here and there, like Superman appearing in Supergirl, Guy Gardner’s appearances in Lanterns, or Rick Flag Sr. referencing the events of Superman and Creature Commandos in Peacemaker season 2. However, the time for a major culminating project to bring the DCU together like never before is likely coming soon.

Despite still being young, the biggest challenge the DCU seems to be facing in terms of perception is how all these various pieces will come together. While not every project has to build toward something bigger, the opportunity to have major crossover events and connect various threads is a big reason for having an interconnected universe in the first place. Keeping that in mind, it does seem like James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow is perfectly positioned to provide what many are looking for.

Man of Tomorrow Will Be Much Bigger Than Just Superman

Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn’s follow-up to 2025’s Superman, is already shaping up to be a major interconnected crossover event that could do quite a bit in terms of making the DCU feel more interconnected.

David Corenswet is returning as the Man of Steel, though the movie will uniquely team Kal-El up with Nicolas Hoult’s Lex Luthor against the major cosmic threat of Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). However, the movie is reportedly set to have a major cast of characters from across various DCU projects, including Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.

Additionally, Aaron Pierre will also appear as John Stewart following his recent debut in Lanterns, and Xolo Maridueña will return as Blue Beetle, having had one of the very last DCEU movies while also being one of the few heroes to be retained for the new DCU. Adria Arjona is also set to debut in Man of Tomorrow, though there’s debate about who she’ll actually be playing (Maxima or Wonder Woman).

All things considered, that’s a pretty impressive collection of characters. With a classic DC supervillain like Brainiac threatening Earth, it makes sense that Superman will need all the help he can get, while also being the perfect chance to bring various characters and plot threads under one major DCU event.

Whether 2027’s Man of Tomorrow gives us a full Justice League-style event or another project eventually takes the role, there’s no denying that the DCU could use a major crossover sooner rather than later. Introducing individual characters is important, but watching them engage with each other is what makes a shared universe feel genuinely alive.

Case in point, the MCU had its first major crossover event with 2012’s Avengers, just four years after its first movie with 2008’s Iron Man. The crossover rewarded audiences for following the franchise while also proving that these characters could tell a larger story together as a greater ensemble, and it really got the ball rolling when it came to showing the interconnected universe’s full potential going forward.

That’s something that will no doubt be part of the DCU sooner or later…but hopefully it’s sooner. With at least 7 major heroes expected to appear in Man of Tomorrow, it certainly does feel like next year could be the DCU’s first real change to bring everything together.

Man of Tomorrow is set to release on July 9th, 2027 from DC Studios.
