Eagles sign former Ohio State standout Shaun Wade after UFL season

The Eagles are taking another shot on a former college standout who used the UFL to work his way back into the NFL conversation.

Philadelphia signed defensive back Shaun Wade after his strong season with the Dallas Renegades, adding another experienced cornerback to a secondary that will be one of the most competitive position groups on the roster entering training camp. Wade, a former consensus All-American at Ohio State, was selected by the Ravens in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft before being traded to New England ahead of his rookie season.

Wade spent three seasons with the Patriots from 2021-23, appearing in 20 games and making six starts. That background gives the signing an interesting Eagles connection because Wade worked in New England with Mike Pellegrino, who is now Philadelphia’s secondary coach. For a player trying to restart his NFL career, familiarity with a position coach can matter, especially when the path to a roster spot may depend on quickly learning technique standards, coverage rules and special teams responsibilities.

After his Patriots stint, Wade spent time with the Chargers and Bears before joining the UFL’s Dallas Renegades for the 2026 season. That move became a springboard. Wade was one of the UFL’s most productive defensive backs, finishing with three interceptions and five pass breakups while allowing just 15 receptions for 147 yards on 35 targets. Among UFL defensive backs targeted at least 25 times this spring, Wade finished with the highest coverage efficiency grade at 86.2.

The Eagles are already loaded in the secondary, with Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean and Riq Woolen leading the cornerback group. Jakorian Bennett, Kelee Ringo, Mac McWilliams, Tariq Castro-Fields, Ambry Thomas and others are also competing for roles, making Wade’s path to the 53-man roster difficult. Still, his UFL production gives him a legitimate case to earn camp reps and potentially push for a practice squad spot if he does not make the initial roster.

Wade’s appeal is simple. He has pedigree, NFL experience, special teams potential and recent production in live competition. The Eagles do not need him to become a starter. They need him to add competition, protect against injuries and prove that his UFL performance was more than a spring hot streak.

For Wade, the signing is another chance to turn a winding professional path into a longer NFL opportunity. For the Eagles, it is a low-risk addition to one of the deepest secondaries in football, with enough familiarity and production to make the move worth watching once training camp opens.
