Durbar restrictions: Kano Govt warns against mobilising people to disobey lawful directives

The Kano State Government has warned traditional rulers, religious and community leaders, political actors and members of the public against mobilising people to disobey lawful government directives.

The government said disagreements over the recent restrictions on Durbar activities and the ongoing Kano Emirship legal dispute should be handled through lawful channels rather than confrontation or actions capable of disturbing public peace.

The warning was contained in a statement signed by Aminu Hussaini, Special Adviser to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Justice and Constitutional Matters.

The statement followed a video circulating on social media in which the Sarkin Dawaki Babba expressed his views on the restrictions placed on Durbar activities and gave his interpretation of the ongoing court proceedings concerning the Kano Emirship.

“While citizens have the right to express their views on matters of public interest, the interpretation and enforcement of court orders are matters for the courts,” the statement said.

It said an individual’s understanding of a court order does not give that person the legal right to disregard a directive issued by a competent public authority.

“Where any person considers a government directive to be inconsistent with a court order, the appropriate course is to seek judicial clarification or other appropriate legal relief,” the statement said.

The government also urged those involved in the Emirship dispute to allow the pending court cases to run their course without using them as a reason for confrontation between citizens and government authorities.

It called on traditional rulers, religious and community leaders, political actors and the public to exercise restraint in their statements and actions.

According to the government, legitimate disagreements can be expressed, but legal grievances should be taken to court.

It added that lawful directives remain binding unless they are set aside, suspended or changed by a competent authority.

The state government further reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, constitutional rights, judicial independence and peaceful resolution of disputes.

“Kano State Government will not permit any individual or group to turn a legitimate dispute into a challenge to public order,” Hussaini said.

He warned that attempts to mobilise people to disobey lawful directives, obstruct lawful authorities or disturb public peace would attract government action.

“Any attempt to mobilise persons to defy lawful directives, obstruct lawful authority or disturb the peace will be dealt with promptly, firmly and strictly in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
