Lakers’ Bronny James Makes Candid Admission About Carrying LeBron’s Name

He answered those doubts directly at Monday’s media day. “It’s just something that I’ve followed my entire life. You guys know me as Bronny. My real name is LeBron. Like, I’ve been, you know, doing this for however long,” James said.

“So I think it’s a motivating factor for me just getting up every day and trying to prove myself as Bronny instead of LeBron.” Asked if the new challenge without his father excites him, James kept his answer short. “Yeah, for sure. You know, I’m ready to get out there and play,” James added.

The young guard spent his rookie season splitting time between the Lakers’ roster and their G League affiliate to develop his game. Former NBA forward Matt Barnes believes the new circumstances will push James to grow faster. “I think it’s great now that obviously Bron is gone and Bronny is kinda on his own,” Barnes said.

Bronny is motivated to make his own place in the league with his game.

James has carried the LeBron name since childhood, always measured against his father’s Hall of Fame resume. The Lakers selected him 55th in the 2024 draft, and critics immediately questioned whether the pick reflected talent or the family connection instead of draft-day merit.

James described what keeps him grounded away from that noise. “I think, for me, just the motivating factor of, you know, creating my own path and, you know, my own career, you know, just makes me want to get up every day and work hard and come to the gym and learn from guys that have been here longer than me,” James told reporters. His $2.3 million contract for this season is fully guaranteed, and a $2.48 million team option follows for 2027-28.

The Lakers open training camp this week before a full preseason schedule leads into the regular season. James will compete for backup guard minutes as he tries to lock down a permanent rotation spot on his own terms.
