Could Texas A&M's senior running back lead the SEC in rushing?

Texas A&M’s 2026 offense will once again be led by starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who, entering his redshirt junior season, is coming off a career year after throwing for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, finally living up to the expectations, but struggled during the Aggies’ final two losses to Texas on the road, and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

Still, working with new OC Holmon Wiggins and QB coach Joey Lynch should help the Tennessee native take another step in his development, and after adding former Alabama wide receiver Isaiah Horton, Texas A&M’s WR room will help speed up Reed’s ability to make better and quicker decisions in the pocket, with more success on 50/50 balls given Horton’s 6’4″ frame.

However, for Holmon Wiggins’ offense to work, Texas A&M’s running game is now led by senior Rueben Owens after veteran back Le’Veon Moss signed with the Miami Dolphins this offseason and then announced his retirement. Owens, who is a former five-star prospect, has dealt with his own injury issues, but was fully healthy last season, and led the Aggies on the ground with 639 yards and five touchdowns.

At 5’11” and over 220 pounds, Owens is built for the NFL, but has yet to put together a complete season after struggling at the end of the year, while his worst game was against the Longhorns after being unable to keep his feet, which must be eliminated this season. Paired with rising sophomore Jamarion Morrow, this 1-2 punch in the backfield just needs the offensive line to come through.

If the revamped O-line shows improvement on the ground, Rueben Owens could end up leading the SEC in rushing, leading The Ruffino & Joe Show to ask the question, ” Is it possible?” Yes, but, as I stated beforehand, this will heavily depend on his vision and ability to evade tackles and explode upfield after making his first cut.
