Could a blowout loss be the tipping point

Todd Bowles enters Thursday Night Football with his future as the Buccaneers‘ head coach looking increasingly uncertain. Tampa Bay is 0-4, has lost 11 of its last 13 games dating back to last season, and is staring at the possibility of its first 0-and-5 start under Bowles. A loss to Dallas would be damaging enough, but getting embarrassed on national television could force the Glazer family to seriously consider whether Bowles should finish the season.

The concern goes well beyond four games. Tampa Bay started 2025 with a 6 and 2 record before losing seven of its final nine games and missing the playoffs. That collapse carried directly into 2026, when the same problems continued to show up despite another offseason of changes. Offensive inconsistency, communication breakdowns, penalties, and an inability to finish games have become recurring issues rather than occasional mistakes. Bowles has already overseen significant coaching turnover. Tampa Bay is operating with its fifth offensive coordinator in five seasons, with Zac Robinson becoming the latest coach tasked with fixing the offense. The Bucs also replaced special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey after last season. Yet the offense continues struggling to protect its quarterback, special teams remain inconsistent, and Bowles’ own defense still has issues handling motion and covering tight ends.

That last part deserves particular attention. Bowles is not simply overseeing the defense. He is responsible for calling it. Tampa Bay has invested significant resources into that side of the football, including Antoine Winfield Jr., Vita Vea, Yaya Diaby, and several recent draft picks. While the defense has shown improvement in stretches, recurring coverage mistakes and communication problems remain difficult to excuse this far into his tenure. There is also the matter of accountability. Bowles frequently talks about needing to coach better, execute better, and eliminate mistakes, but those explanations have become increasingly difficult to accept when the same problems continue appearing every Sunday. A competitive loss to Dallas would not necessarily force an immediate decision, especially considering Tampa Bay’s injuries. But a blowout would be different. It would suggest that a team already struggling to win close games is now losing its ability to compete altogether. If Tampa Bay leaves Dallas at 0 and 5 after another embarrassing performance, the question should no longer be whether Bowles is on the hot seat but who takes his place as interim.
