Why Ravens Get a Low Grade for Cam Jurgens Trade

The Baltimore Ravens made a significant move for center Cam Jurgens, but the trade has received a low grade from some NFL analysts. The decision reflects the team’s urgency to protect Lamar Jackson, though the price and uncertainty surrounding the offensive lineman make the deal a risky investment.

Baltimore acquired Jurgens from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick. The Ravens were motivated to address their offensive line after dealing with injuries and inconsistent play, making the veteran center an attractive option despite questions about whether he can immediately stabilize the unit.

Jurgens brings experience from Philadelphia and has spent time playing at multiple positions along the offensive line. His familiarity with high-level competition gives Baltimore a player who can potentially step into an important role, while his athleticism fits an offense that places significant demands on its interior blockers.

The problem is that the move comes with considerable uncertainty. Jurgens has dealt with injuries during his career, and Baltimore is counting on him to provide reliable protection for its franchise quarterback during a season in which every possession carries significant weight. If he struggles to stay healthy or adapt quickly, the Ravens could find themselves having surrendered valuable draft capital without receiving the desired return.

Baltimore’s decision to trade for Jurgens received a low grade. This can be seen in an analysis by Seth Walder for ESPN.

Ravens get: C Cam Jurgens, 2027 seventh-round pick
Eagles get: 2027 fifth-round pick, 2028 second-round pick

Ravens grade: D+
Eagles grade: A

The Ravens are surrendering a second-round pick (plus a swap of fifth- and seventh-round picks) for the right to pay a non-premium position player market price after this season. Jurgens is due a fully guaranteed $16 million next year. He’s due $17 million (non-guaranteed) in 2028 and 2029. Jurgens’ $17 million average per year for the duration of his contract makes him the fourth-highest-paid center in the league, behind only Linderbaum, Creed Humphrey and Aaron Brewer, per OverTheCap.com. By comparison, Connor McGovern, who had better numbers than Jurgens last season, makes a little over $13 million per year.

The trade also raises questions about the timing of Baltimore’s decision. A fourth-round selection is not an enormous price for an established offensive lineman, but the Ravens are still betting that Jurgens can become a meaningful upgrade rather than simply providing temporary depth. That makes the move difficult to evaluate immediately, particularly with the team’s long-term roster construction in mind.

Ultimately, Baltimore deserves credit for addressing an important weakness and prioritizing protection for Jackson. However, the Ravens accepted enough risk to justify a lower grade, and Jurgens’ health, consistency and impact will determine whether the aggressive move becomes a valuable addition or an unnecessary gamble as the season progresses.
