Brittney Griner added another milestone to her Hall of Fame résumé on Monday night, but the historic achievement wasn’t the only thing that came out of the Connecticut Sun‘s blowout win over the Chicago Sky.

Griner became the WNBA’s all-time blocks leader during Connecticut’s 92-63 victory, passing former star Margo Dydek and cementing her place among the greatest defensive players the league has ever seen. By the end of the night, Griner had recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four blocks while helping the Sun cruise to one of their most impressive wins of the season.

But amid the celebration, Griner also picked up a technical foul that will cost her financially.

A record-breaking moment for Griner

The record-setting play came during the third quarter when Griner swatted away a shot attempt from Chicago center Kamilla Cardoso. The rejection gave Griner 878 career blocks, moving her past Margo Dydek for the most blocks in WNBA history.

It’s another remarkable achievement for Griner, who has built a career around protecting the rim. Since entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2013, she has consistently ranked among the WNBA’s most dominant defensive forces.

On a night that featured history, Griner once again showed why opponents remain reluctant to challenge her near the basket.

Technical foul brings automatic fine

While Griner had plenty to celebrate, she also left the floor with her first technical foul of the 2026 season. The technical came late in the third quarter and triggers an automatic $500 fine under WNBA rules.

The league’s disciplinary structure increases as technical fouls accumulate. Players are fined $500 for each of their first three technical fouls, while the fourth through seventh technical fouls result in $1,000 fines. Any technical foul beyond that threshold carries a $1,500 fine and a one-game suspension.

For Griner, the punishment is relatively minor at this stage of the season, but it does put her on the league’s disciplinary radar moving forward.

The Sun star must also watch her flagrant points

The technical foul isn’t the only disciplinary concern attached to Griner’s season. She already has one flagrant point after a physical incident involving Angel Reese earlier this month.

Under WNBA rules, players who accumulate four flagrant points face an automatic suspension. That means Griner will need to be careful over the remainder of the season, especially given the physical style she often plays in the paint.

Connecticut looking to build momentum

The bigger story for the Sun may be that Monday’s victory continued a positive stretch for a team searching for consistency. Griner’s record-breaking performance helped power Connecticut to a dominant win, and the Sun will look to carry that momentum into Friday’s matchup against the Washington Mystics.

Still, Monday will be remembered primarily for Griner’s place in league history. The technical foul may have cost her $500, but becoming the WNBA’s all-time blocks leader is the type of accomplishment that will be remembered long after the fine is forgotten.
