Sophie Cunningham had plenty to say on social media the day after the midterm elections. After sharing a post about “being better Americans” on Wednesday, the Indiana Fever guard followed it up with another message.

This time, Cunningham shared a blunt quote from boxing legend Mike Tyson to her Instagram story, which took aim at people who feel comfortable disrespecting others online.

Cunningham’s Post-Election Message

On Wednesday, a day after Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate, Cunningham reposted a lengthy message from podcaster and entrepreneur Andy Frisella to her Instagram story. The post argued that the country’s problems can’t be fixed through elections alone.

“One of the strangest things about our culture is how much faith we’ve placed in elections to change our lives and how little faith we’ve placed in our own ability to do the same,” the post read.

“Politics is downstream of culture. We can keep changing the people in charge, passing new laws and arguing over which party has the answers … but until we change the culture fostering, producing and tolerating the problems we have as a society, nothing fundamentally changes,” it continued.

The post didn’t mention a party or candidate. But the timing was notable, coming from a player who has become a lightning rod for her political views. Cunningham sparked a firestorm this summer when she said she wants to protect girls from having to compete against “biological men,” comments that critics called transphobic.

Still, Cunningham has insisted that her political views fall right in the middle.

“I’m very much in the middle. I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides,” Cunningham told ESPN’s Hallie Grossman in July.

Mike Tyson Quote

Later, Cunningham shared another message to her Instagram story, this time a quote from Tyson.

“Social media made y’all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it,” the post read, according to OutKick.

Cunningham did not add any comment of her own, and it’s unclear what, if anything, prompted her to share it.

She has been vocal about how she’s treated online, though. Earlier this week, Cunningham called her critics “psychotic” and said they have “so much hatred in their heart.” She also recently revealed that she has hired 24/7 security.
