Babcock University has distanced itself from a purported academic certificate circulating on social media and allegedly linked to popular Nigerian content creator and comedian, Carter Efe, declaring the document fake and warning that those responsible for its creation or circulation could face legal consequences.
In a public notice dated June 29, 2026, the university said it had become aware of fraudulent documents being circulated by individuals falsely claiming affiliations with the institution and possessing academic certificates and distinctions purportedly issued by the university.
According to the institution, one of the documents in circulation is an alleged “Honorary Certificate” issued to Oderohiwo Joseph Efe, popularly known as Carter Efe, which claims he received a “First Class Upper” degree.
Babcock University unequivocally stated that the certificate is fraudulent, unauthorized and did not emanate from the university.
The institution explained that it does not issue honorary certificates in recognition of undergraduate academic performance. It further clarified that academic excellence is formally recognized only through the university’s official degree certificate and academic transcript issued by the Office of the Registrar.
The university also noted that it has no academic degree classification known as “First Class Upper,” stressing that its highest undergraduate classification is First Class Honours.
“The purported certificate is false, unauthorized, and does not emanate from the University,” the statement emphasized.
Babcock urged employers, professional bodies, government agencies, educational institutions and members of the public to disregard the document and any similar certificates allegedly issued by the university outside its established academic processes.
The institution advised anyone seeking to verify academic credentials to do so through its Office of the Registrar.
The university further warned that anyone found knowingly producing, presenting, circulating or using forged academic documents in an attempt to obtain employment, admission, promotion, professional recognition, immigration benefits or any other advantage would be liable to investigation and prosecution under applicable laws.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the integrity of its academic records and institutional reputation, Babcock University said it would pursue appropriate legal and criminal action against individuals involved in forging its certificates or unlawfully using its name.
The university’s statement comes amid widespread circulation of the alleged certificate on social media, where it sparked debate over its authenticity before the institution officially dismissed it as a forgery.
