Maple Leafs fans eager to start anew have plenty of opportunity to evaluate the new-look team as Toronto plays the second half of a back-to-back to open the season Wednesday against the Islanders.

Toronto went from first to worst in the Atlantic Division last year, a stunning fall from grace that ended in the franchise’s lowest win total (32) in a decade and ended a nine-year run of playoff appearances. Auston Matthews remains the centerpiece but there are plenty of new faces around him, from coach Jim Hiller to goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky and No. 1 overall draft pick Gavin McKenna.

While the Leafs already have one game under their belt, Wednesday marks the opener for an Islanders team also looking to bounce back after a disappointing campaign. Peter DeBoer had the interim tag removed after replacing Patrick Roy late in the regular season for a playoff push that came up empty, the Isles’ second straight year missing out on the postseason.

Plenty of talent remains, including Vezina Trophy runner-up Ilya Sorokin and 2025 first overall pick and 2026 Calder Trophy winner Matthew Schaefer. Finding a way to put it all together starts Wednesday.

Here’s all you need to know to watch.
