The Chicago Blackhawks (0-1-0) aim for their first win of the 2026-27 season when they take on the Utah Mammoth (0-0-0) at the Delta Center on Thursday. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CT, with coverage on ESPN+, Hulu, and Disney+.
The Blackhawks opened the new season on Tuesday with a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena, marking their third consecutive opening-night defeat. A sluggish start doomed the Blackhawks against the reigning Western Conference champions, with more goals allowed (2) and penalties committed (2) than shots on goal (1) through 15 minutes.
Jordan Greenway and Patrick Kane scored the Blackhawks two goals in Las Vegas, with Ryan Greene and Wyatt Kaiser tallying assists. Spencer Knight started in net and stopped 32 of 36 shots, recording the loss despite a stout effort.
The Mammoth make their season debut on Thursday and look to build off a successful 2025-26 campaign in which they finished fourth in the Central Division with 92 points (43-33-6). The Mammoth qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs but were eliminated in the first round, blowing a 2-1 series lead and losing in six games to the Golden Knights.
Utah sees much of their supporting cast return from last year, including captain Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz, Dylan Guenther, Logan Cooley, Mikhail Sergachev, and Karel Vejmelka. The Mammoth also added veteran forwards Anders Lee and Vincent Trocheck in the offseason, further bolstering their roster.
In two home openers, the Mammoth have a 2-0-0 record and have outscored their opponents 8-3. One of those victories came against the Blackhawks in 2024-25, winning 5-2 in the first-ever game at the Delta Center. Utah also defeated the Calgary Flames 3-1 in their first home game in 2025-26.

Without a morning skate, the Blackhawks’ starting goaltender will not be known until the team hits the ice for pregame warmups. Knight is 3-0-0 with 1.93 GAA and .935 Sv% in three career games against Utah, perhaps giving him the edge to start over Arvid Soderblom.
Vejmelka is projected to start for the Mammoth in their season debut. The 30-year-old netminder is 5-1-3 with a 2.70 GAA and .903 Sv% in nine career games against Chicago.
