APM Terminals Awards Scholarships to 50 Apapa Students

APAPA, NIGERIA – APM Terminals Apapa has awarded scholarships to 50 undergraduate students from its host community in Apapa, Lagos, bringing the total number of beneficiaries under its scholarship programme to 151.

The scholarships were presented on Friday during the third edition of the programme, which supports students studying at public universities and other accredited higher institutions across Nigeria.

The initiative is part of the company’s efforts to expand access to higher education and support young people in its host community.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, Koen De Backker, said investing in young people was essential to developing future leaders and creating lasting benefits for society.

He said the company measured its success not only by its operational performance but also by the positive impact it made in the communities where it operates.

“Today’s scholars are tomorrow’s leaders. While equipment and infrastructure can be acquired, building people requires deliberate investment, commitment, and time,” De Backker said.

He urged the beneficiaries to remain focused on their academic goals, embrace continuous learning and maximise the opportunities provided by the scholarship.

Company Reaffirms Commitment to Education

The Terminal Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa, Kamal Alhraishat, said the scholarship programme reflected the company’s belief that sustainable progress begins with investing in people.

He explained that the company’s corporate social responsibility strategy focused on three key areas: education, healthcare and environmental sustainability.

According to Alhraishat, supporting students through education was part of the company’s broader approach to contributing to the development of its host community.

He encouraged the beneficiaries to believe in their abilities, set ambitious goals and remain committed to academic excellence.

The latest cohort brings the total number of students supported through the scholarship initiative to 151 since the programme began.

The initiative provides financial support to students pursuing higher education at eligible institutions, potentially easing some of the financial pressures associated with university studies.

Apapa Council Commends Community Investment

The Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area, Jimoh Olawale, commended APM Terminals for sustaining its investment in the host community.

He recalled the company’s partnership with the council to renovate a health centre, which was reopened in February 2026.

Olawale described the scholarship initiative as an opportunity to improve young people’s prospects by supporting their educational ambitions.

Representatives of Apapa Local Government, the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency and the Nigeria Customs Service also commended the company for maintaining the programme and expanding access to higher education.

Their remarks highlighted the role of partnerships between private-sector organisations, public institutions and host communities in supporting education and local development.

Beneficiary Highlights Value of Scholarship

One of the beneficiaries, Olakunle Oluwafemi, a medical student, described the scholarship as an investment in his future aspirations.

He said an internship opportunity provided through the initiative had given him practical experience to complement his academic training and strengthened his career prospects.

His account highlighted the potential value of combining financial assistance with opportunities for workplace exposure and professional development.

The beneficiaries and their parents expressed appreciation to APM Terminals for the support, which they said would help students pursue their educational goals.

With 50 additional students receiving scholarships in the latest edition, the programme has expanded its reach to 151 beneficiaries.

The initiative adds to the company’s community-focused interventions in education and healthcare, while its long-term impact will depend on sustained support and the ability of beneficiaries to complete their studies and apply their knowledge in their chosen fields.
