Andrew Mukuba feels like a veteran entering his second Eagles season

PHILADELPHIA — Andrew Mukuba may only be entering his second NFL season, but the Philadelphia Eagles safety no longer feels like a newcomer in Vic Fangio’s defense. Mukuba said on Saturday that his experience within the system has made him feel like a veteran. He is also grateful to be back on the field after an injury interrupted his promising rookie season.

That combination of familiarity and health could become important for Philadelphia’s secondary. Mukuba flashed the range, instincts and versatility that made him one of the organization’s top selections in the 2025 NFL draft before his season ended prematurely.

The injury forced Mukuba to attack rehabilitation while continuing to learn away from the field. He returned to training camp with a greater understanding of Fangio’s defense and a clearer picture of what the coaching staff expects from him.

Second-year players often make their biggest developmental jump because they are no longer processing every element for the first time. Mukuba already understands the terminology, meeting structure, and preparation required during an NFL season. That familiarity should allow him to react faster and play with greater confidence.

His return also provides stability to a safety group that underwent significant change during the offseason. Marcus Epps brings experience, while Cooper DeJean’s versatility allows Fangio to use him at safety in base packages before moving him into the slot in nickel and dime alignments.

Mukuba’s ability to handle a significant role would give Fangio additional flexibility throughout the secondary. He can cover ground, play near the line of scrimmage, and provide the interchangeable qualities that Philadelphia values in its defensive backs.

Feeling like a veteran does not remove the challenges awaiting Mukuba. He must remain healthy and consistently turn his knowledge into production.

Still, his return gives the Eagles one of their most promising young defensive backs. After spending part of his rookie season recovering, Mukuba is healthy, comfortable, and prepared to demonstrate how much he learned.
