Aaron Rai has suggested that Luke Donald was very understanding of his reason for not attending the scouting trip to Adare Manor made by a number of Team Europe members this week.
Team USA have certainly been given additional reason for concern ahead of next year’s Ryder Cup in Ireland, with Luke Donald taking the opportunity to get a number of players together at the venue that will host the event.
There were 10 of the players who represented Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor on Monday, with only Rory McIlroy and Rasmus Hojgaard absent. Meanwhile, Donald also invited a handful of players with no Ryder Cup experience along.
Aaron Rai was not in attendance, which may have surprised some given that he won the PGA Championship earlier this year. Rai has also represented Great Britain and Ireland in the 2025 Team Cup.
Aaron Rai explains missing Team Europe’s scouting trip to Adare Manor
The Englishman confirmed ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth that he had been invited to take part. However, he was unable to make it work due to prior commitments.
“I’ve been in the States for the last three weeks, and it was actually a close friend’s wedding on Sunday, which was in Portugal, which I said I would go to a few months ago. So I felt the travel from America to Portugal, then Portugal to Ireland, then Ireland to here would have just felt like a lot,” he said.
“This is a really big event, and it means a lot to me. So I felt like I wanted to kind of prepare for this, especially on the back end of that busyness. It would have just felt like a lot really.”
How Luke Donald reacted to Aaron Rai’s decision
There is surely no question that Europe benefitted at Bethpage from having 11 of the same players who had won the Ryder Cup in Rome two years later.
It really does feel as though the European team has become a machine over the last two decades. That does, however, make it harder for someone like Rai who is looking to break into the team for the first time.
So you can understand why he was so conflicted about missing the visit to Adare Manor. However, he suggested that Donald had no issue with his decision.
“Luke was very understanding. We actually briefly spoke at The Open Championship a few months ago. That was the first that I’d heard of the trip, and I said I’ll definitely think about it, but I explained to him the situation even then,” he said.
“I took my time, and I really did try and make that trip, but I just felt like it would be a lot on me in terms of the travel. I think with this tournament as well, on top of the travel, it just felt like it was the right decision overall not to go, try to explain it and apologise. Obviously I was grateful for the opportunity to be asked, but yeah, it was a tricky decision overall.”
It is going to be incredibly difficult for those potential rookies to make the team if they do not qualify automatically.
Rai has shown that he can deliver on the biggest stages, but he is surely going to need to at least win over the next 12 months if he hopes to make his Ryder Cup debut in 2027.
