San Fransico 49ers fans are mourning the loss of former 49er Aldon Smith, who died at the age of 36.
The team released a statement:
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the 49ers’ statement read. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”
So far, the cause of death has yet to be released. Smith played with the 49ers for four years from 2011 to 2015.
In his rookie season, he was runner-up for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He spent the last few years of his playing career with the Oakland Raiders in 2015 and spent his last season in 2020 with the Dallas Cowboys.
In his career, he had 228 tackles, 52.5 sacks, and one interception.
