Wisconsin men’s basketball has lost one of its verbal commitments in the 2027 recruiting class.
Jack Thelen, a 7-foot-1 center from Maple Grove, Minnesota, has decommitted from the Badgers and reopened his recruitment, his agents told ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello.
UW was Thelen’s first reported offer from a high-major program after he previously announced offers from schools such as Miami (Ohio), Murray State and Montana. He had a four-star rating from 247 Sports, and the recruiting site ranked him 15th among centers in the 2027 class.

15 / 15Thelen’s decision leaves Wisconsin with two commitments in the 2027 class – former Wauwatosa West star Jalen Brown and fellow Maple Grove standout Baboucarr Ann. Brown is 68th and Ann is 92nd in 247 Sports’ overall 2027 rankings.
Brown transferred to Sequoia Charter School in Arizona for his senior year of high school. Ann has been teammates with Thelen both in high school and on the AAU circuit.
UW’s number of open roster spots in 2027-28 will depend on several factors, including current players’ decisions about a fifth year of eligibility and any transfer portal attrition. The only UW players who are expected to be in their final year of eligibility in 2026-27 are Owen Foxwell and Braeden Carrington.
