Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake – How To Change The Time Of Day

Zelda: Ocarina of Time is back in remake form, and it brings a ton of new stuff. Not only will everything look different than what you’re used to (even compared to the newer 3DS remake), a few location details have changed, including several nuanced dungeon interactions.

But much of the core foundation remains the same, and the requirement to complete certain quests at night or during the day returns. Here’s how to change the time of day in multiple ways, both of which will be useful whenever you’re exploring this newly minted overworld.

Option 1: Rest In A Bed

In Zelda: Ocarina of Time, you can change the time of day early in the game (and subsequently thereafter) by sleeping in a bed. These are denoted by green covers throughout the game, and can be located within houses in villages (like Kakariko) or in tents and other makeshift areas.

To rest, confirm/select the bed, then choose to sleep until morning, sleep until night, or visit the Hall of Fallen Heroes. The first two options are extremely important because some quests in Ocarina of Time force players to talk to certain characters at night, or complete specific requirements/find characters that only appear during the day.

The Hall of Fallen Heroes is just what it sounds on the tin: it’s a way for the player to revisit boss battles or miniboss battles on demand. If you speak to the owl (Kaepora Gaebora) statue on the lowest floor when you zone in, you can do a boss rush-style minigame that’s new to the remake.

The Hall of Fallen Heroes becomes accessible a few hours into the game, and you’ll know you can visit it by the feathery green aura that emanates from beds. If it has this animation, one of the options when you interact with it will whisk you away to a mysterious, magical area that may exist only in Link’s mind as the Hero of Time.

Option 2: Play The Sun’s Song

You’ll acquire the Sun’s Song in the main story after picking up Zelda’s Lullaby. By playing the song (ARX, ARX), you can change the time immediately, from day to night. The song is extremely short and ends with a nice little trill. Get in the habit of playing it, because it’s one of the fastest songs to play in the game.

This is useful for a variety of reasons, namely, if you’re out in the wild and don’t have access to a bed. Many time-sensitive quests in Ocarina of Time are out in the open world, and a few even ask you to “take a couple of days” before they complete.

Playing the Sun’s Song is one of the easiest ways to solve a puzzle in Ocarina of Time, but it won’t do much inside dungeons, where many of the game’s biggest challenges lie. Always keep it in your back pocket while you’re wandering Hyrule Field and beyond.
