The New York Yankees didn’t want to keep J.C. Escarra right now, which meant they had to make a roster move late Friday.

They’ve sent Escarra down to Triple-A, and they’re calling up Ali Sanchez, a different catcher.

In reporting the news, YES Network’s Jack Curry notes two stats for Sanchez, neither amazing: a .702 OPS and five of his six home runs have come against right-handed pitching.

Given that hitting righties wasn’t the problem for Escarra or Austin Wells, who both bat left-handed, maybe the Yanks would’ve loved to try out a catcher who hits southpaws better.

Unfortunately, though, the best the Yankees had was Sanchez.

He’s not related to Gary Sanchez, for the record.

This Sanchez isn’t close to the hitter that Gary once was. Ali Sanchez is clearly a professional baseball journeyman at this point.

The reality is that the Yanks won’t get adequate catcher performance from Sanchez in the major leagues. He’s already proven that he’s not going to just take MLB by storm or anything like that.

He’s certainly the type of player it’s important to have around, but Ali Sanchez isn’t a guy to be getting playtime when the games really matter.

The Yankees need Austin Wells to turn things around, and however they supplement things is up to them, but there will be more and more trade rumors as the Yankees keep trying things out to solve the catcher positional woes they’ve been having.
