The North Carolina Tar Heels and Bill Belichick were set to bring aboard a transfer quarterback with ridiculous statistics.
Taron Dickens, who played at the FCS level for Western Carolina, committed earlier this season to play QB for the legendary coach. In 2025, he had thrown 38 touchdowns with just two interceptions while completing 74.2% of his passes for 3,508 yards along with 321 rushing yards.
On Friday, though, Dickens decommitted from his transfer.
On3 Sports reported that Dickens is going to be re-entering the transfer portal.
Why isn’t Taron Dickens going to UNC?
Dickens decommitted “because of academic reasons,” according to On3 Sports.
The report didn’t provide more information than that, but it did confirm that Dickens was officially released from signing with the Tar Heels.
Assuming no major issues, Dickens could be an awesome late pickup for another program. He threw 51 touchdowns with just five INTs in his career at WCU.
North Carolina still has two new transfer quarterbacks. Billy Edwards came aboard from Wisconsin, and Miles O’Neill from Texas A&M.
Edwards and O’Neill both come from larger programs, but neither have put up stats at the college level near what Dickens did.
But what’s done is done, and UNC has to move on with the QBs it still has in its building in the hope of getting the most important position in sports right for Belichick in his second college season.
