One of Mark Wahlberg‘s best movies is a thrilling depiction of a true story, and time is running out to watch it on streaming. While the actor has made a career out of doing outrageous comedies, entertaining action flicks, giant blockbusters, and more, he also has a tendency to bring real people’s stories to life on the big screen.
Wahlberg has made over a dozen movies that are in some way tied to a true story, but they encompass a variety of genres. He did a sports underdog story with 2006’s Invincible, a crime drama with 2017’s All the Money in the World, a touching family drama with Joe Bell, and an emotional adventure film with the underrated Arthur the King.
But if there is a genre Wahlberg returns to most of all, it is action thrillers. He’s done R-rated, action-heavy entries like Shooter, Contraband, and 2 Guns and found great success. Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon are two great examples of Wahlberg combining his love of true stories and action thrillers, but so too was what came next.
Wahlberg reteamed with Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon director Peter Berg to make 2016’s action thriller Patriots Day. The actor stars as Tommy Saunders, a sergeant for the Boston Police Department. The movie, which runs for 2 hours and 13 minutes, is based on a devastating true story, but it is about to leave streaming.
Patriots Day Told A Recent Tragic True Story

Patriots Day is a harrowing look at the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, where two bombs were detonated, killing three and injuring hundreds more. The movie chronicles the Boston PD’s intense search for the terrorists, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and the impact the attack had on Boston.
Wahlberg is at the center of a cast that includes Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, Michelle Monaghan, Alex Wolff, Rachel Brosnahan, and more. While the movie is a fairly accurate look at the search for the Tsarnaev brothers, Patriots Day does change the true story, such as creating Tommy Saunders to act as an amalgamation of several real officers involved in the manhunt.
The results are impressive. Patriots Day earned strong reviews, sitting at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, by paying respect to the tragedy of the real events and depicting what happened in a gripping manner. The cast delivers across the board, but it’s Wahlberg’s performance that really stands out.
Mark Wahlberg Gives One Of His Best Performances In Patriots Day

It is quite clear while watching Patriots Day that Wahlberg is fully invested in telling this story and honoring everyone who helped take down the Boston Marathon bombers. As a Boston actor, Wahlberg feels at home in the movie, bringing a natural accent, determination, and emotionality that helps Tommy Saunders become a fully realized character.
It’s undeniably one of the best performances Wahlberg has given in his decades-long career. The actor’s usual attempts to include some levity in his roles are left behind for this project, allowing him to keep Patriots Day grounded and focused on the drama and tragedy. It makes for a very different Boston police sergeant role than what he had in The Departed, which got him an Oscar nomination.

For anyone who hasn’t seen Patriots Day before, and the film’s $52.2 million box office performance suggests there are many who haven’t, don’t wait any longer to check it out. The true story action thriller is currently streaming on Prime Video, but it won’t for much longer.
Patriots Day is confirmed to be leaving Prime Video on November 1, so it can start a new streaming journey on Tubi. That gives you less than a week to watch the movie on Prime Video and experience the intense true story and Mark Wahlberg‘s excellent performance.
