On Monday, the Dallas Mavericks opted to shake things up by waiving veteran big man Dwight Powell ahead of the upcoming season. The move sees the team part ways with the player who had been the longest-tenured member of the organization by a country mile prior to the news.
Now, NBA insider Mark Stein has reported on how the move will have a ripple effect on other teams around the league ahead of the new season, many of whom had been hoping to acquire fellow big man Moussa Cisse, whom Dallas would have had to release had they opted to keep Powell around.
“Chicago, sources say, has interest in the high-energy big man. I’m told Atlanta also has interest,” reported Stein on his Substack.

He also reported that “the 76ers and Lakers would have strong interest in signing him to a two-way deal even though neither team currently has a two-way opening.”
However, instead, it seems that the Mavericks will be keeping Cisse around at the expense of Powell, who will likely have some suitors looking for a reserve big man to add to their roster ahead of the new season.
Perhaps those same teams could be in the market for him, even though they won’t be getting their preferred Dallas big man.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks are currently making their final preparations for the upcoming season, with Kyrie Irving back and looking very healthy during the preseason, and Cooper Flagg looking to take the next step in his star trajectory after winning the Rookie of the Year award last year.
Dallas is slated to kick off its season on Wednesday on the road vs the Houston Rockets.
