With fewer than 10 days remaining until the start of Kentucky Basketball‘s regular season, preseason predictions are beginning to shape expectations for the Wildcats’ third year under head coach Mark Pope.

The AP and Coaches Top 25 Polls recently came out, with Kentucky landing at No. 23. Meanwhile, analysts and college basketball insiders are offering their predictions for where the Wildcats will finish in the SEC.

With some believing Pope is facing a make-or-break season, he appears to have assembled a team with the potential to be an offensive juggernaut, although questions remain about its defense and overall depth.

For Kentucky to meet expectations and make a run to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament, Milan Momcilovic and Malachi Moreno will need to establish themselves as two of the team’s top players. The Wildcats will also need significant contributions from newcomers Zoom Diallo, Alex Wilkins, Ousmane N’Diaye and Mason Williams, along with the returns of Braydon Hawthorne and Kam Williams.

So, how does Kentucky shape up against the rest of the SEC? Tristan Freeman of Hoops HQ recently released his early SEC Basketball Power Rankings.

Freeman placed the Wildcats at No. 7, highlighting the talent of Momcilovic, Diallo, and Wilkins while identifying Moreno as a potential breakout player.

“After numerous public recruiting battles, the final outlook of Kentucky’s roster looks to be at least in the top-25 range. Momcilovic was the best shooter in all of college basketball last season, while both Diallo and Wilkins are capable scoring guards. The key will be Moreno, who nearly stayed in the NBA Draft and will be a consensus breakout candidate. With depth being a question, Coach Mark Pope will need all four of these guys to be impact players.”

James Fletcher III of On3 also ranks Kentucky No. 7 in his SEC Power Rankings.

Fletcher pointed to Pope’s work in the transfer portal, along with his ability to retain key players from last season, as reasons for optimism. He also emphasized Moreno’s potential after a promising freshman campaign and the impact Momcilovic could make after returning to college basketball.

The addition of Momcilovic gives Kentucky another high-level offensive threat at forward, while Wilkins’ versatility in the backcourt could help determine how far the Wildcats go this season.

Despite the questions surrounding Kentucky’s defense and depth, the Wildcats have the offensive talent to exceed expectations if their key players perform up to their potential.

With Kentucky basketball looking to make a statement in Pope’s third season, the Wildcats will have an opportunity to silence their doubters and if Kentucky can find the right balance between its offense and defense, perhaps the Wildcats can deliver the kind of surprise season that Kentucky football has produced this fall.
