Blood and Wine is a must-have expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that greatly expands the game world, adding a whole new region — Toussaint — to explore, a customizable player home for Geralt, and even cosmetic dyes for in-game armor. Dyes come in various pigments and allow players to change Geralt’s armor to colors like green, yellow, and pink. These dyes can be obtained from loot, purchased from a vendor, or crafted.
The simplest way to get dyes in Witcher 3 is by buying them from a shopkeeper exclusive to Toussaint. However, this method requires players to install the Blood and Wine expansion and complete the quest “A Poet Under Pressure,” which can be accepted by visiting the town quest board of Mulbrydale in Velen.
While it’s possible to start the quest at any level, it is recommended that players attain Level 35 or higher before embarking for Toussaint. Alternatively, you can begin a new game and access the Blood and Wine DLC content immediately by choosing “Blood and Wine Only” from the list of menu options. This allows you to jump right the DLC with a pre-leveled Geralt, who will start Blood and Wine at level 34 with appropriate gear, skills, and stats.
In addition, you can also craft your own dyes with the Blood and Wine expansion. To do so, you’ll have to find the appropriate crafting diagram, gather the materials, and combine them as you would with any other alchemical item. Some enemies in Blood and Wine will drop dyes and recipes as random loot, too, so don’t forget to search for these whenever possible.

Once you have made it to Toussaint in Witcher 3, you can find the Dye Merchant on the east side of Beauclair. Travel to Beauclair Port and head south across the bridge. Across the water, you should be able to spot a small area with spilled paint on the ground and a group of people dipping clothes into colorful pools of pigments.
Head to this location and speak with the vendor in the center to get access to dyes in Witcher 3. If you wish to refresh the Dye Merchant’s stock to see more outfit colors, they can have Geralt Meditate for an hour and then speak to the shopkeeper again.
How To Dye Armor in Witcher 3
After buying the desired armor dye in Witcher 3, you can open your inventory to change Geralt’s armor color:
- Equip the armor piece(s) you want to dye.
- Choose the dye, which will appear in your inventory under “armor,” and click it once or press A (Xbox or Switch)/X (PS5) while it’s highlighted.
- This will open a menu of your currently equipped armor. Highlight the piece of Geralt’s Witcher armor to be modified, and you’ll see a preview of what it’ll look like once dyed.
- Once you’re happy with your armor’s appearance, click the armor piece or press A/X again to confirm the dye.
Each Armor Dye in The Witcher 3 can only be used once, and if you wish to revert the clothing’s color to what it was before, you must use a Dye Remover, which can also be purchased from the Dye Merchant.
All Armor Dyes In The Witcher 3
Armor dyes in Witcher 3 are quite expensive, costing more than a thousand Crowns each. Players wishing to save their hard-earned coin can find Dye Formulas throughout Toussaint to craft armor pigments on their own. Below are all the different dye colors and the locations of their recipes, plus a list of the ingredients you’ll need to craft each one.
Do note that, to create any kind of dye, you’ll need a bottle of Dye Solution. This can be found at various merchants throughout the game, including any herbalist in Toussaint.
Black Armor Dye
Black Armor Dye is a rare find in The Witcher 3, a unique color that the Dye Merchant usually won’t sell. To find this customization for your Witcher 3 outfit:
- Go to the maze-like ruins located in the northwest part of the Toussaint map, west of the small lake with an island.
- Search the area to find a skeleton lying beside a chest.
- Loot the skeleton to obtain the recipe for Black Armor Dye.
To craft Black Armor Dye, you’ll need:
Blue Armor Dye
- Head for the cave north of Beauclair Palace.
- Search the skeleton inside to find the Blue Armor Dye recipe.
Brown Armor Dye
- Follow the road south from Mont Crane Castle to this bandit camp.
- Enter the camp, defeat the bandits, and retrieve the Brown Armor Dye diagram from a chest.
Gray Armor Dye
The Gray Armor Dye diagram can be found inside the Witch’s House west of Fox Hollow. To craft it, you’ll need:
Green Armor Dye
- Go to the camp south of Castel Ravello Vineyard, and north of Chuchote Cave.
- The Green Armor Dye recipe is located next to the tent.
Orange Armor Dye
The Orange Armor Dye recipe can be looted from the broken wagon at the southern foot of the bridge just north of the Dun Tynne Crossroads waypoint. You’ll need:
Pink Armor Dye
- Head to Beauclair using the Metinna Gate or Nilfgaardian Embassy waypoint.
- Travel to the cemetery in the southeastern part of the city.
- The Pink Armor Dye diagram can be looted off a skeleton here.
Purple Armor Dye
- For the Purple Armor Dye recipe, head to this abandoned shack north of Beauclair Castle and south of the lake with the strange island in the middle.
- The diagram isn’t inside the shack; it’s on the cart parked outside.
Red Armor Dye
- Fast travel to the Cockatrice Inn waypoint and travel southeast to this cave, located at the end of this bend in the river.
- Explore the cave; near the end, you’ll find the Red Armor Dye recipe.
Turquoise Armor Dye
The Turquoise Armor Dye diagram is located in the same cave as the red dye recipe (see above for more detailed instructions), although much closer to the entrance. To craft it, you’ll need:
White Armor Dye
- Begin the Blood and Wine sidequest “Knight for Hire” by reading any notice board in the region.
- One of the sidequest locations is a bandit hanse base located at Mont Crane Castle. Travel there and defeat the bandits.
- Once you’ve cleared out the location, climb up to the roof at the location indicated above.
- The White Armor Dye diagram will be located in a small chest here.
Yellow Armor Dye
- After taking over the Mont Crane hanse base (see above), head into the tunnels beneath the castle.
- You’ll find the Yellow Armor Dye diagram on an alchemy table.
With that, you’ll be able to find, collect, and craft every color of Armor Dye in The Witcher 3. Mixing and matching these will allow you to customize Geralt’s look to your liking so you can explore Toussaint in style.
