Where is MLB All-Star Game 2026? When was the last time Philly hosted

The country’s 250th anniversary won’t be the only thing Philadelphia celebrated this month as the 96th MLB All-Star Game will be held at Citizens Bank Park this week.

Much like when the country was celebrating its bicentennial in 1976, the home of MLB’s Midsummer Classic was hosted by the City of Brotherly Love.

But it’s not the only time MLB has showed off its top players in Philly.

See when the All-Star Game was held in Philly and details on this year’s game against the American and National leagues:

The last time Philadelphia hosted the All-Star Game was in 1996 at Veterans Stadium, the former home of the Phillies.

The 67th Midsummer Classic featured a staggering 19 future hall of famers including Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken. The Iron Man, who was in the midst of his record-breaking games played streak, was nearly taken out prior to the game when Chicago White Sox closer Roberto Hernández accidentally hit Ripken in the nose during the team photo.

Other future hall-of-famer players who made the team included Wade Boggs, Roberto Alomar, Iván Rodríguez, Edgar Martínez, Frank Thomas and Ken Griffey Jr. for the AL as well as Barry Larkin, Fred McGriff, Mike Piazza, Chipper Jones, Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez, Ozzie Smith and Tony Gwynn for the NL.

The game itself was much less dramatic, with the National League coming out on top 6-0 thanks to the NL staff that included rookie reliever Ricky Bottalico, who pitched a scoreless fifth inning as the Phils only representative.

Piazza, the then-Los Angeles Dodgers catcher and Phoenixville, Pennsylvania native, was named the game’s MVP after going 2 for 3 with a two-run home run off Cleveland Indians pitcher Charles Nagy.

It was the third straight win for the NL before the AL went on a 13-year win streak.

The last Home Run Derby in Philadelphia was a classic.

Prior to the 1996 Midsummer Classic, 10 participants competed in the derby which ended with a duel between two all-time greats, San Francisco Giants outfield Barry Bonds and Oakland A‘s first baseman Mark McGwire.

Both advanced to the finals, as Bonds led with 10 and McGwire followed with nine.

In the finals, Bonds trailed by two homers with one out left. He then homered on three straight swings to earn his only derby title.

Twenty years early, Philadelphia fittingly hosted the All-Star Game as the country was in the middle of its 250th-anniversary celebration.

Like the ’96 game, there was no shortage of legends at the ’76 contest with a dozen future hall inductees including Mike Schmidt, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, Tony Pérez and Tom Seaver for the NL as well as Rod Carew, George Brett, Carlton Fisk, Carl Yastrzemski, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage and Catfish Hunter.

Along with Schmidt, the Phillies also sent outfielder Greg Luzinski, catcher Bob Boone, shortstop Larry Bowa and second baseman Dave Cash to the game.

Fittingly, this game was also a runaway victory for the NL by a score of 7-1 thanks to a three-run homer by Cincinnati Reds outfielder and game MVP George Foster.

The NL win was during a stretch that saw the Senior Circuit victorious from 1972 to 1982.

Prior to the Vet, the game was held at Shibe Park in North Philadelphia in 1952.

The contest featured a slew of hall-of-fame legends such as Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Nellie Fox, George Kell, Larry Doby, Minnie Miñoso, Bob Lemon, Satchel Paige for the AL as well as Jackie Robinson, Stan Musial, Roy Campanella (a Philly native), Enos Slaughter, Gil Hodges, Red Schoendienst, Pee Wee Reese, Ralph Kiner, Duke Snider, Monte Irvin and Warren Spahn for the NL.

Among the 21 future hall-of-fame players was Phillies pitcher Robin Roberts, who was joined by Phils’ pitcher Curt Simmons and shortstop Granny Hamner — both starters.

This one was closer but the NL still prevailed 3-2 with Chicago Cubs third baseman Hank Sauer’s fourth-inning, two-run homer being the difference as the game was called in the fifth due to rain.

The first All-Star Game in Philly was held at Shibe Park, but this time as an AL park since the Phillies shared the stadium with the Philadelphia Athletics.

Notable hall of famers to be selected to the game were Billy Herman, Stan Musial, Ernie Lombardi and Mel Ott for the NL as well as Bobby Doerr, Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, Luke Appling, Lou Boudreau and Al Newhouser.

The AL came out on top 5-3 with Doerr, the Boston Red Sox legend, leading the way with two hits and three RBIs.

Vince DiMaggio (brother of Joe and Dom DiMaggio) starred for the NL, going 3 for 3 with a homer and a triple.

The 2026 MLB All-Star Game will be held on July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
