In a significant move that will help shape the 2027 landscape, the DP World Tour said Monday that players will not be allowed to compete on both LIV 2.0 and the European circuit next season.
DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings told BBC Sport that players will have to “make a choice” regarding their future plans, and that the tour will no longer allow select players to compete on a limited basis.
This season, nine players, including Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, received conditional releases that allowed them to play both tours.
That option will no longer be available.
“Players need to make a choice,” Kinnings told the BBC. “We have rules and regulations which are there to protect our tour and which our members must all abide by. Players who are not willing to comply with our rules and regulations should not be seeking to join our tour.”
Kinnings’ hardline stance comes at a critical time with LIV 2.0 trying to secure a “critical mass” of players to launch the league in 2027, with a player deadline set for Oct. 25 in order to satisfy the requirements of the court-supervised restructuring process. The DP World Tour, meanwhile, has a 2027 player commitment deadline of Nov. 16.
Only members of the DP World Tour are eligible to compete on the European Ryder Cup team.
There has already been some movement on the player front. Jon Rahm’s lawyer said last week that Rahm will not participate in LIV 2.0, and other players, such as Sergio Garcia and David Puig, have also publicly stated they’re headed toward the exit.
The Telegraph recently reported that Bryson DeChambeau was exploring his options with the DP World Tour, but the circuit’s new rule would force him to choose a side. Joaquin Niemann does not currently have DP World Tour status but could theoretically receive invitations into tournaments – provided he does not sign up for LIV 2.0.
The DP World Tour is also currently negotiating an extension of its strategic alliance with the PGA Tour, which has not allowed any crossover with LIV since the rival league’s launch in 2022.
