Abia State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the rape and murder of female nursing student, Wendy Achumba, in Obowo, Imo State.
The late Miss Achumba, a 21-year-old student of Our Lady of Mercy Nursing scho5ol, was raped and murdered in her off-campus residence at Umuadara, Umulogho, Obowo, Local Government Area on May 22, 2026.
In a motion of urgent public importance presented on Tuesday, a member of the Abia State House of Assembly, Ucheonye Stephen, demanded swift justice for the victim, a native of Obingwa LGA of Abia State.
The lawmaker who commended the efforts of security agencies and community stakeholders that led to the arrest of the suspects connected with the crime, demanded that all the investigations on the matter be concluded expeditiously.
Ucheonye further called called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Imo State Police Command and all relevant security agencies to ensure a transparent, thorough, and diligent investigation and prosecution of all persons found culpable.
The lawmaker advised the Imo State government and relevant authorities to strengthen security surveillance around educational institutions, students’ hostels, and off-campus accommodations.
In response to the motion, the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, stated that the loss of young adults was an experience no one would wish for.
He noted that the murder case is currently under investigation but assured that the House will hold an audience with Governor Alex Otti over the matter.
