‘We won’t negotiate with bandits, terrorists’ – Gov Mutfwang vows

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has vowed that his administration will never bow to pressure and negotiate with bandits and terrorists, but will instead do everything possible to protect residents and democratic institutions in the state.

Mutfwang, who made the declaration during the state’s Democracy Day celebration held in Jos on Friday, stated categorically that his administration remained committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

Speaking at the event organised by Verified Conversations and Inside Plateau in partnership with the state government, Mutfwang reiterated that, despite the lingering security challenges that have plagued the state for several years, his government will only engage with citizens through lawful, democratic channels, rather than surrendering to terror merchants.

“Plateau will not negotiate with terrorists. We will protect our people, protect our communities, and protect democracy. Anyone who thinks violence will give them a seat at the table of governance is mistaken,” the Governor told the audience which included the state Deputy Governor, Josephine Piyo, top government officials, civil society groups, youths and other critical stakeholders.

Speaking further, Gov. Mutfwang said his administration has been able to respond swiftly to recent security challenges, especially in southern Plateauu, through emergency security meetings, visits to internally displaced persons’ camps and increased collaboration with security agencies.

“On security, we responded swiftly to the crisis in southern Plateau by convening a security council meeting, visiting IDP camps, and strengthening collaboration with security agencies.

“With Mr President’s approval, recruitment into our security architecture is underway, and we have set up emergency lines for citizens to report suspicious activities. We are also investing in technology and additional security formations to keep our communities safe,” he stated.

He however, blamed enemies of Plateau for the seemingly unending insecurity in the state which he said is an orchestrated plan to keep Plateau State in perpetual poverty, and vowed that the government will defeat insecurity at all costs.

According to Mutfwang, despite all the challenges, the people of Plateau State must make Nigerians know that they are ready for business, adding that despite all the difficulties, many Nigerians and foreigners still believe in the state.

“Despite all these challenges, our profile to outsiders is rising. And that is why today, the patronage of hotels in Plateau State is the highest in the North, apart from Abuja,” he said.
