USC travels to Happy Valley with a 5-1 record, looking to strengthen its College Football Playoff résumé against a Penn State team desperate to reverse the course of its season.
The Trojans enter this weekend following a 25-21 comeback victory over Washington, while the Nittany Lions have lost consecutive Big Ten games. Both teams are desperate to change the narrative this weekend. Who actually can?
1. USC’s Passing Attack Faces Its Biggest Road Test

Jayden Maiava is central to USC’s chances. The quarterback averages 311.7 passing yards per game and has shown he’s able to sustain drives, converting 52.1 percent of the offense’s third-down attempts.
Penn State’s pass defense, however, is a major counterweight to USC’s offensive firepower. They have playmakers in the secondary, including Audavion Collins, who entered the matchup tied for fourth nationally with seven pass breakups.
If Penn State consistently disrupts Maiava’s timing, the Trojans could struggle to maintain their usual offensive rhythm.
2. Penn State’s Run Game Must Respond
Penn State’s most pressing problem is its rushing defense. It allowed 413 rushing yards in a 34-13 loss to Northwestern, a collapse that exposed tackling problems and difficulty controlling the line of scrimmage. And it’s especially concerning against a USC offense capable of exploiting defensive gaps.
Rocco Becht must also protect the football. He threw interceptions in consecutive losses, including a multi-interception performance against Northwestern. Penn State needs more sustained drives, better protection, and a more effective ground attack to prevent USC from dictating the tempo.
3. White Out, Injuries, and the Betting Outlook

This is USC’s first visit to Penn State since 1994, and the home crowd will make communication difficult for the Trojans. Penn State has a 6-1 record in its previous seven White Out games before losing to Oregon in double overtime last season. The environment gives the Nittany Lions a legitimate chance to turn their season around.
But USC has shown some resilience, rallying past Washington with 15 unanswered points, and has been efficient on third and fourth downs, which could help them neutralize the crowd by extending possessions. USC’s injury situation bears watching, particularly the availability of receiver Trent Mosley, who has missed time recently.
The betting market has reflected the uncertainty, with Penn State a short home favorite despite USC’s stronger record. That makes this a particularly interesting test of whether the Nittany Lions can correct their defensive problems quickly enough.
USC vs. Penn State Prediction: Who Wins?
DraftKings Line: Penn State -1.5 | Total: 54.5
Penn State’s crowd should make the opening quarter intense, but USC’s passing game and offensive consistency should overcome Penn State’s ability to fix its rushing defense in one week. Maiava should find enough opportunities downfield, while the Trojans’ offense can control possession and force the Nittany Lions to keep pace.
