UBEC sets November 15 deadline for states to prepare for HOPE-EDU

The HOPE-EDU Programme Manager, Dr Aisha Abdul, said UBEC had been working with the World Bank, consultants, technical experts and state governments since February to prepare for the implementation of the programme.

She called on officials participating in the workshop to ensure that their respective states completed and submitted their action plans within the stipulated timeframe.

Abdul explained that the Structured Pedagogy Package was focused not only on providing educational resources but also on ensuring that those resources translated into improved learning outcomes.

She said the programme would support states in providing quality teaching, appropriate instructional materials and effective systems for assessing pupils.

A representative of the World Bank, Elice Elegbe, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to working with the Federal Government to improve basic education across the country.

Elegbe, however, noted that state governments also had an important role to play, particularly in ensuring that interventions aimed at improving foundational learning were properly implemented.

The Federal Ministry of Education representative at the workshop, Mr Kigbu Johnson, said strengthening basic education was essential to improving the overall quality of Nigeria’s education system.

He described the workshop as an opportunity for stakeholders to address weaknesses at the foundational level and develop practical solutions that would benefit Nigerian children.

UBEC said the regional workshops would be conducted in three stages to cover the six geopolitical zones. The first phase is being held in Lagos, while subsequent sessions will take place in Uyo and Kano.

The commission said the sessions were intended to provide states with the technical knowledge, institutional support and practical tools required to implement Result Area 1 of HOPE-EDU effectively.

It added that the initiative would focus on improving the availability and quality of teaching and learning materials, strengthening institutional capacity and promoting greater accountability in the delivery of basic education.

The commission said the ultimate objective was to ensure that the investments under HOPE-EDU produced tangible improvements in classrooms and helped raise teaching and learning outcomes for children across Nigeria.
