We are counting down the 15 biggest highlights from the last year of Kentucky Wildcats sports, looking at the moments that stood out, and brought out the best in Big Blue Nation. The No. 2 moment comes to us from the volleyball court, and a comeback win that electrified the fans.
The Wildcats volleyball team rolled through conference play, going 15-0 during the regular season. Then, in the SEC Tournament, they easily dispatched the Auburn Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers to reach the championship match against the Texas Longhorns. Texas was one of the country’s best teams all season, and would not go down easily.
Texas quickly demonstrated their abilities by dominating the opening set, winning it 25-19. In the second set, Kentucky jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but couldn’t hold it. The Longhorns won the prolonged set 28-26 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, things looked bleak for the Cats. They fell behind early, and trailed for most of the way. Texas led 23-19, and seemed poised to sweep the match. Then a service error was followed by a Lizzie Carr block. An attack error made it 23-22, but Texas arrived at match point, 24-22. Eva Hudson smashed home a kill. Then Hudson’s serve wasn’t returned, tying the match. A set error moved Kentucky in front by a point before Asia Thigpen completed the comeback to take the set 26-24.
After that, momentum shifted. Kentucky took set four 25-22, then finished off the reverse sweep by taking set five 15-9. It was a tremendous win that catapulted the Wildcats to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and a run to the championship game. The comeback win showed the true competitiveness and determination that they had. They refused to lose, and made a highlight to remember.
