“Time Is Up”: Bomani Jones Delivers Blunt Take On Mike Norvell As Florida State Faces Coaching Dilemma

For a few years now, Florida State University has resisted calls to fire football head coach Mike Norvell. The school’s athletics department is currently $430 million in debt, and to make things worse, it cannot just fire Norvell, as he has a buyout estimated at $68 million.

Despite this, sports journalist Bomani Jones believes that it is now time for the university to part ways with Mike Norvell but acknowledged the school could not afford to right now.

“Mike Norvell’s time is up, but Florida State can’t afford to move on,” he tweeted.

“In the last couple of years, dudes start getting fired. In the last couple of years, nobody has been fired in Florida State. I mean, the answer seems to be obvious, they ain’t got the money,” he said.

Mike Norvell has been the head coach since the 2020 season and has had some success over at Florida State. He led the team to an undefeated season in 2023, en route to winning the ACC championship. However, this was followed by a 2-10 season in 2024, starting the calls for him to be fired. Last season, they had a 5-7 season, with the calls to fire him continuing.

The team is currently 3-3 but is 1-2 in the ACC. The Seminoles will take on No. 3 Miami next, and are expected to come in as massive underdogs. After that will be a bye week and then a game against Clemson to end October.

Mike Norvell was also dealing with incidents off the field, as now-former Seminoles cornerback Chauncey Kennon was arrested last Monday on charges of false imprisonment, aggravated fleeing to elude, and resisting an officer without violence. The coach confirmed he has been cut from the team.

“He’s no longer a part of the program,” the coach said. “Obviously disappointing, but there are standards and expectations for our players, for our coaches, for everybody that’s part of the program, and obviously Chauncey didn’t meet those expectations.”

Kennon allegedly ran from police in a Dodge Durango and committed several additional violations, including running a red light. The former cornerback then left his vehicle and fled on foot. A passenger was found “with lacerations to her arm, wearing a bodysuit covered in dirt stains, blood, and grass.” She told police that she told him to stop, but he did not.
