SC Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster has praised the progress of Burkinabé international Cyriaque Irié following Thursday evening’s 3-2 Conference League victory over FK Jablonec. The 21-year-old winger produced one of his most convincing performances in a Freiburg shirt, repeatedly troubling the Czech visitors with his pace, dribbling, and dangerous attacking runs. Schuster nevertheless believes that the youngster still has work to do when it comes to converting promising situations into decisive contributions.
Irié was one of seven changes Schuster made to his starting XI following Sunday’s Bundesliga victory over Schalke 04. As detailed in Get German Football News‘ player ratings and match report, the Burkinabé international proved particularly lively during Freiburg’s dominant opening quarter-hour. Irié twice broke through on the right in the opening five minutes, narrowly missed the target with an excellent individual effort in the seventh, and forced another save shortly thereafter. His delivery also supplied Lukas Kübler with a headed opportunity that struck the crossbar.
Schuster pleased with Cyriaque Irié’s progress
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Schuster praised the winger’s ability to create dangerous situations almost single-handedly.
“I think everyone could see that he had a major influence on the game,” Schuster noted. “There were many, many actions involving his dangerous one-on-one play. I would have liked him to finish off all that work and those moves. That’s definitely something we’ll continue working on, so that he rewards himself for those moments.”
Schuster also praised the progress Irié has made on the training pitch, particularly during the recent international break.
“It definitely helped that he was here during the international break and that we were able to work on certain things,” the 41-year-old explained. “I think you can see that he’s also in better physical condition.”
A difficult first season finally giving way to progress
Freiburg invested a reported €8.5m in Irié’s transfer from French second-division side Troyes in 2025. The powerful left-footed attacker arrived with considerable potential, but his introduction to German football proved considerably more difficult than anticipated.
Already in Get German Football News’ 2025/26 Freiburg tactical preview, Irié was identified as a promising yet raw prospect whose speed and technique warranted further development. The competition for attacking positions nevertheless left him facing a difficult path toward regular Bundesliga minutes.
A bout of malaria subsequently disrupted his first campaign, compounding the challenges associated with adjusting to a new league and Freiburg’s demanding tactical system. The signs of progress became far more encouraging this summer. As examined extensively in our 2026/27 Freiburg tactical preview, Irié returned in noticeably better physical condition and began turning his athletic qualities into more effective attacking contributions.
He scored an excellent goal in the preseason victory over Derby County and subsequently impressed in Freiburg’s Conference League playoff against Motherwell. The return leg against the Scottish Premiership side proved particularly significant. Irié struck the crossbar, scored from a Derry Scherhant corner, and repeatedly threatened the opposition defense.
Thursday’s performance against Jablonec provided further evidence that the improvement has carried into the competitive campaign. The youngster still faces considerable competition from established right winger Jan-Niklas Beste, whose greater familiarity with Freiburg’s defensive responsibilities has traditionally given him the advantage in Schuster’s selection decisions.
Irié’s task now is to translate his increasingly impressive individual performances into consistent end product while continuing to develop his understanding of the team’s tactical requirements. If Thursday evening offered any indication, Freiburg’s substantial investment in the young Burkinabé may finally be approaching the point at which it begins paying significant dividends.
