From Apple TV’s Slow Horses to Paramount+’s Special Ops: Lioness, spy TV shows are a hot property on streaming right now, and Netflix has one of the best. Though many of the platform’s notable offerings in the genre, like The Night Agent or FUBAR, have been met with mixed reviews, Black Doves stands out with an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Premiering in December 2024, Black Doves stars Keira Knightley as Helen Webb, the seemingly down-to-earth and normal wife of the UK’s Secretary of State for Defence (Andrew Buchan), who leads a double life as a covert spy. But when her secret lover, Jason (Andrew Koji), is killed, Helen finds herself in grave danger, and her employers, the titular Black Doves, send her former friend and disgraced assassin, Sam (Ben Wishaw), to protect her. Together, Helen and Sam navigate London’s dangerous underworld as they investigate Jason’s murder.
Serving as a dark comedy and domestic drama as well as a spy action thriller, critics praised Black Doves for its seamless, popcorn-thrilling blend of genres. Netflix clearly had faith in the series, renewing Black Doves for a second season before it even aired its first episode. With season 2 just around the corner, now is the perfect time to catch up on the hit spy thriller.
Black Doves Season 2 Releases November 5 On Netflix
Returning just under two years after its first season premiered, Black Doves season 2 releases its entire six episodes on Netflix this Thursday, November 5, 2026. Returning Black Doves cast members include Knightley, Wishaw, Buchan, and Sarah Lancashire, who plays Helen’s handler, Mrs. Reed, in a season that promises to be even more intriguing and action-packed than its predecessor.
In Black Doves season 2, the stakes are higher across the board. Helen is about to become the wife of the UK Prime Minister, which will give her more access to high-level state secrets but also put her under intense scrutiny from both the public and her husband. Meanwhile, multiple members of the Black Doves have been assassinated, leaving Helen and Sam to put the pieces together while their lives are more at risk than ever before.
With a bigger story comes a bigger cast, and Knightley and co. will be joined by Neve Campbell (Scream franchise), Ambika Mod (One Day), Babou Ceesay (Alien: Earth), Sam Riley (Maleficent), Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049), Goran Kostic (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful). The pool of who Helen can and cannot trust is officially much bigger.

Spy thriller shows inevitably get more complex the longer they run, making it a chore for new viewers to catch up if they haven’t followed the series from the beginning. The Emmy-winning Slow Horses is the genre’s most popular current series, but at 36 episodes across six seasons, starting it from scratch would be a major time commitment.
In contrast, Black Doves has only one six-episode season so far, making it a much more palatable binge. Those interested could even get through the Keira Knightley show in a single weekend. Not only is the episode count low, but the episodes are so fast-paced that watching them won’t even feel like six hours of television. In contrast, viewers who like to take their time can still get through all of Black Doves season 1 well before season 2 premieres on November 5.
