The simple reason why Rory McIlroy may change his PGA Tour schedule in 2027 has just become clear

Rory McIlroy has bounced back superbly well at the BMW Championship after his horror week in Memphis.

McIlroy endured a torrid time at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, finishing third from last at TPC Southwind.

However, the 37-year-old Northern Irishman has looked like a completely different player this week at Bellerive.

Rory McIlroy has posted rounds of 64, 69 and 65 at the BMW Championship this week, and is sitting in second place heading into the final round on Sunday.

Sure, he is five strokes adrift of the leader, Wyndham Clark. However, the improvements he has shown from last week have been significant, and timely to say the least with the Tour Championship on the horizon.

McIlroy has been pleased with the progress he’s made at the BMW Championship, and the next step for him will be to record his second win of the season either on Sunday, or next week at East Lake.

McIlroy has been bouncing down the fairways this week in St. Louis, Missouri.

Sure, his game hasn’t been perfect, but my word, it has been like night and day from what he showed us at TPC Southwind.

The simple fact of the matter is that McIlroy looked thoroughly miserable out on the golf course last week in Memphis.

Conversely, he has been full of the joys of spring this week at Bellerive.

It’s really not rocket science, is it?

The more that McIlroy plays throughout the year, the sharper he will be not only heading into the major championships, but for the end-of-season playoffs as well.

McIlroy is playing just his seventh tournament since The Masters this week, and three of those were majors!

That is simply not conducive to playing good golf consistently throughout the entire season.

Rory McIlroy may want to enjoy his time away from the golf course more in the twilight years of his playing career.

However, playing less tournament golf is self-defeating, and it could end up expediting his retirement from competitive action if he’s not careful.

The main things that McIlroy needs in order to remain competitive are the hunger and drive to improve.

And playing so little is not helping him whatsoever in that regard.

The more the six-time major winner plays, the happier he seems out on the golf course.

I fully expect him to play an additional two or three tournaments on the PGA Tour next season, perhaps even more.

His form and, more importantly, his mood, this week at Bellerive has shown him that more regular competitive action is the way forward.
