EXCLUSIVE: When The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns for its third season this November, there will be a major reunion between two characters with an emotional twist.
The fantasy series takes place before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and shows Sauron’s rise to power. Several characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books play central roles, like Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf. In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3, Sauron’s power will grow leading up to the creation of the One Ring.
Amid that dramatic domination by Sauron, the series will also show a highly anticipated reunion. Jamie Campbell Bower has been cast as Celeborn and will make his Rings of Power debut in season 3, setting up an emotional moment between him and his wife, Galadriel, played by Morfydd Clark.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan, Clark explained that there’s a “deep understanding of truly being known” between these two characters.
Celeborn was presumed dead, and after being apart for as long as they have at this point, they will have to navigate a new dynamic and figure out if they “still know the depths of each other.”
Morfydd Clark: “What I love about their dynamic is there’s such deep, deep understanding of truly being known. And I think that’s what kind of disrupts them a little bit, because they’ve been apart for so long. It’s like, ‘Do we still know the depths of each other?’ They’ve got a very beautiful relationship, I think.”

Echoing that sentiment, Bower added that there’s a “vulnerability” between Galadriel and Celeborn. The actor took on this role wanting to imbue that feeling into his character. “For both of us, it helps to build [the relationship],” he said. “It helps us to build that sense of trust and connection.”
Both Clark and Bower called Galadriel and Celeborn’s relationship “beautiful,” with Bower adding that even though she thought she lost her husband, Celeborn has “held onto the idea of her for centuries…and that’s still there.”
Jamie Campbell Bower: “I think it’s that vulnerability. I think I felt and came to this from a space of wanting to be super cut open, basically, within myself and performance. For both of us, it helps to build [the relationship], as long as we’re both in that space. It helps us to build that sense of trust and connection.

During the same interview with ScreenRant, The Rings of Power co-creator and co-showrunner J.D. Payne teased what fans can expect from the reunion. “When they get back together again, there’s that moment when she drops the sword, and we go into slow motion,” he explained.
The two actors played the scene with a lot of “sensitivity and beauty as they go up to each other and look at each other,” and there will be clear emotions painted on their faces. “That was a huge moment,” Payne admitted. “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to get it right.”

J.D. Payne: “I think another moment is Celeborn and Galadriel’s reunion. People have been wondering about how it might happen for so long, and when they get back together again, there’s that moment when she drops the sword, and we go into slow motion.

Since it’s a TV show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has the breathing room to be able to explore these iconic Middle-earth characters in ways that Peter Jackson’s trilogy didn’t have the time for.
Galadriel, for example, is a calmer figure in the films, though she has a moment of weakness when it’s revealed how susceptible she is to the One Ring. The Rings of Power, by contrast, shows a younger version of Galadriel who’s an ambitious warrior with impulsive tendencies.
The last time Celeborn was seen on screen was in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, where he was played by Marton Csokas, with Cate Blanchett as Galadriel. The Rings of Power is not canonically connected to Jackson’s films, but the characters still share similarities while being able to delve into other dynamics of their personalities and behavior.
