Harry Potter: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Hedwig

Harry Potter has plenty of people looking out for him throughout the Harry Potter series. Ron and Hermione stand by him through some of his most dangerous adventures, while Dumbledore offers guidance and Hagrid becomes one of the first adults Harry can truly depend on. But before Harry even meets his future best friends, Hagrid gives him a snowy owl for his eleventh birthday. Harry names her Hedwig, and she quickly becomes one of his closest companions. For a boy who spent most of his childhood feeling unwanted by the Dursleys, having a pet of his own means a great deal.

Hedwig does much more than deliver Harry’s letters. She keeps him company during his miserable summers at Privet Drive, finds people Harry has no idea how to reach, and isn’t afraid to show her displeasure when he’s upset her. Her loyalty makes her death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows even more heartbreaking. Although she doesn’t get as much screen time as Harry’s other companions, it’s hard to imagine him getting through those lonely summers without her.

Hedwig is also returning in HBO’s new Harry Potter series, alongside Dominic McLaughlin as the young wizard. The new series is also making some changes to parts of the original movies, including their music. With Hans Zimmer writing the new score, it’s unclear whether John Williams’ famous “Hedwig’s Theme” will be part of the series. There’s also plenty worth knowing about Hedwig herself, from the owls that portrayed her in the movies to her unusual abilities and the details J.K. Rowling got wrong about snowy owls.

Hedwig Appears In HBO’s New Harry Potter Series

Hedwig makes her debut in HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in the show’s second teaser, released September 2, 2026. Alongside peaks of Dominic McLaughlin’s Harry, the footage shows his snowy owl, as well as Hogwarts’ new professors, a troll, and a game of Wizard’s Chess.

The eight-episode season premieres on Christmas Day 2026. The series could also give Hedwig more screen time, especially during Harry’s summers at Privet Drive, when she’s often his only company.

Hedwig’s Theme Became The Franchise’s Main Theme

John Williams named the Harry Potter movies’ most recognizable melody after Harry’s snowy owl. Composed for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, “Hedwig’s Theme” uses a celesta to create its magical sound (via HarryPotter.com). Despite its name, the music isn’t reserved only for Hedwig’s scenes. It also plays when Harry first sees Hogwarts.

Williams composed the first three films’ scores, but later composers continued using his melody throughout the remaining five movies. By the end of the series, a piece named after Harry’s pet had become the musical signature of the entire franchise.

HBO Is Giving Harry Potter A New Musical Score

In January 2026, HBO announced that Hans Zimmer would compose a new score for its Harry Potter series alongside Kara Talve and Anže Rozman of Bleeding Fingers Music. Zimmer has previously scored The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Dune, but following John Williams definitely presents a different beast.

Speaking to Collider in September 2026, Zimmer said he wanted to create something original rather than imitate Williams’ music. That leaves the future of “Hedwig’s Theme” uncertain, as HBO hasn’t confirmed whether the famous melody will appear in the new series.

Hedwig Was Harry’s First Real Birthday Present

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Harry-Potter-Hedwig.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

Harry had little reason to celebrate his birthday while living with the Dursleys, who showered Dudley with presents while barely acknowledging him. That changed on his eleventh birthday, when Hagrid took him to Diagon Alley and bought Hedwig from Eeylops Owl Emporium.

Hedwig quickly became one of Harry’s closest companions, especially during the summers he spent stuck at Privet Drive. She kept him company when he couldn’t see Ron and Hermione, and carrying their letters gave him something to look forward to. Hagrid had given Harry more than a pet for his birthday. He’d given him a friend who would always be there for him.

Hedwig Could Deliver Post Without An Address

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Harry-Potter-and-Hedwig.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

Hedwig didn’t need an address to find someone, even when they were constantly moving (via HarryPotter.com). This was extremely useful when Harry needed to contact Sirius Black, who was hiding from the Ministry of Magic. Somehow, she could track him down and deliver Harry’s letters.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hedwig even flew to France to collect Hermione’s birthday present for Harry without being asked. She later found Harry at the Leaky Cauldron after he unexpectedly left Privet Drive. Neither journey seemed to give her any trouble.

Hedwig Didn’t Like Ron’s Owl Pigwidgeon

In the Harry Potter books, Hedwig makes her dislike of Ron Weasley’s tiny, overexcited owl, Pigwidgeon, pretty obvious. Sirius Black gave Pigwidgeon to Ron after his previous pet, Scabbers, turned out to be Peter Pettigrew. Unlike Hedwig, Pigwidgeon constantly bounced around and could barely contain his excitement whenever he had a letter to deliver.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hedwig gives Pigwidgeon a cold stare when he lands on her cage. She even holds still while Harry ties a letter to her leg, as though she’s showing Pigwidgeon how a proper delivery is done. It’s a funny detail from the books that never made it into the movies.

Professor Grubbly-Plank Nursed Hedwig Back To Health

In the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix book, Hedwig arrives during Harry’s History of Magic lesson carrying a letter from Sirius Black. But something is wrong with her wing, prompting Harry to leave class and seek help from Professor Grubbly-Plank, who agrees to treat her (via LexiCon.org).

Professor McGonagall warns Harry that communications in and out of Hogwarts might be monitored, raising suspicions that someone intercepted Hedwig. The book never reveals who injured Hedwig, but the incident makes Harry even more worried about communicating with Sirius while Umbridge is monitoring Hogwarts.

Hedwig Was Named After St. Hedwig

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Harry-Potter-Hedwig-in-flight.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

In the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone novel, Harry finds Hedwig’s name in A History of Magic, a Hogwarts textbook written by Bathilda Bagshot. He chooses it while reading his schoolbooks before his first year at Hogwarts, making his owl’s name another connection to the magical world he’d only recently discovered (via HarryPotter.com).

The name actually came from a medieval saint. J.K. Rowling explained on her original website that she discovered St. Hedwig while reading a book about saints and never forgot the name. However, she didn’t specify which St. Hedwig inspired her.

Several Different Owls Played Hedwig

Hedwig may look like the same owl throughout the Harry Potter movies, but several snowy owls shared the role. Gizmo was the main performer in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, with Kasper, Oops, Swoops, Oh Oh, Elmo, and Bandit also playing Harry’s pet.

According to the American Humane Society, filming required plenty of training. The owls learned to respond to whistles and food rewards, flying between trainers or looking in specific directions. Some flying scenes even used wind machines to make perched owls appear airborne. Lightweight safety lines helped protect the birds during actual flights.

The Owls That Played Hedwig Were MaleHarry-Potter-and-Hedwig-Bookstore Harry Potter: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Hedwig

Although Hedwig is female in the Harry Potter books and movies, the snowy owls that played her were male. According to CornellLab, adult males are usually almost entirely white, while females have darker markings across their feathers. This means Hedwig’s snowy-white appearance in the films is actually more typical of a male owl.

Female snowy owls are also larger and heavier, making the smaller males easier for young actors like Daniel Radcliffe to handle. Their smaller size also made them easier to work with on set, especially in scenes where Harry needed to hold Hedwig on his arm (via LitHub).
