While David Montgomery might be known for his red-zone rushing ability and consistent play of punching it in the end zone, the Houston Texans’ starting running back has made plays as a receiver throughout his playing career.
Last season, Montgomery caught 24 passes for 190 yards as a member of the Detroit Lions. Since entering the league in 2019, he’s averaged at least 32 catches per season and 270 receiving yards.
On Tuesday, the Texans got a glimpse of what the offense could look like should Montgomery add a second gear toward the passing attack.
As the Texans ran a fake scrimmage ahead of Thursday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers, C.J. Stroud hit Montgomery on a wheel route pass for an 80-yard touchdown, marking it as the biggest play of training camp thus far. Stroud connected with Montgomery on a nice pass to the outside about 10 yards downfield, but it was the running back who did most of the work in space.

“David, what he’s done a really good job of is route running,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said after practice. “He and Henry [To’oTo’o] have had a lot of battles thus far in camp. It was cool to see David make a big play for us. That’s the type of player he is. That’s why he’s here for us. He can spark an offense. He can lift us with just making those plays or it’s just by him being a leader, being vocal and encouraging the other guys.”
The Texans expect both Montgomery and second-year running back Woody Marks to be weapons in the passing game.
Houston opens the regular season against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 13.
