Bayern Munich has many self imposed rules, designed to ensure the success and long term sustainability of the club. Non-negotiable rules include selling a maximum of 25% of the club to outside investors and looking to maintain a profit every calendar year. To that extent, the Bavarians’ rule of granting 31 or over players a maximum of one year contracts is perhaps a much smaller rule. But it ensures that Bayern are not on the hook to pay an ageing player far past their best excessive wages for a long stretch of time. Few players have proven their ability to earn massive wages far past their 30th birthday.
But, according to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Harry Kane is one of them. Rumors suggest current negotiations over an extension to the England’s captain contract would tie him to Bayern for at least two more years, breaking Bayern’s rule. But Rummenigge, who served as Bayern’s CEO between 2002 and 2021, believes such an exception is warranted in this case. Asked to give an update on Kane’s future, Rummenigge explained Bayern’s position:
“Harry’s brother and his father are currently negotiating with Jan-Christian Dreesen. I’m optimistic that they will find a good solution,” Rummenigge stated (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “In the past, I would have said that players over 30 should generally only be offered one-year contracts. But there are exceptions when you are convinced by a player. And we are convinced by Harry. We mustn’t forget that has only been injured once in three years.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker, so maligned over the years for his multiple ankle injuries, does have an excellent injury record at Bayern. If the Bavarians do agree to an extension with Kane, they will be hoping for the same in the coming years.
