The Michigan Wolverines have a new head coach in Kyle Whittingham, a man who’s done a lot of winning in his career. Whittingham always did more with less at Utah. During Whittingham’s 21 seasons as Utah’s head coach, he compiled a 177-78 record with wins in the Fiesta Bowl and Sugar Bowl, while also notching two Rose Bowl appearances.
Whittingham, 66, now has more resources than he’s had in his career in terms of recruiting, NIL, staff budget, and beyond — could Whittingham’s final years as a head coach wind up being his best?

Whittingham has a five-year contract with Michigan, and it may take a year or two for him to instill the culture needed to compete for a national championship. The hope will be that Whittingham can lead Michigan to a rapid turnaround just as Curt Cignetti did at Indiana.
While Michigan is considered an elite program, they’ve won just three national championships in the last 80 years — 1948, 1997, and most recently in 2023. However, in the age of NIL and the constant changes in college football, Michigan will remain a powerhouse for years to come, and they may have the right man leading the program for at least the next five years.
