A surprise new episode leads to a streaming reemergence for a Stephen King series. There are no shortage of shows adapting King’s stories, including Carrie, The Institute, 11.22.63, IT: Welcome to Derry, The Outsider, The Stand, Under the Dome, and Lisey’s Story. While some of these are miniseries, Under the Dome ran for three seasons, and Carrie, The Institute, and Welcome to Derry were all renewed for a second season.
Carrie season 2 was renewed only a little over a week before the time of this writing, while The Institute season 2 is coming to MGM+ on November 8, and both of these continuations are going beyond King’s original source material. As for IT: Welcome to Derry, it significantly expands on the interludes in King’s original novel, beginning with season 1 featuring the Black Spot fire, and the series is now a streaming hit again.
IT: Welcome To Derry Returns To HBO Max’s Top 10 After Surprise Episode Release
Welcome to Derry is in sixth place on HBO Max’s U.S. streaming chart after the surprise episode “A Story of Derry” dropped on Halloween. This is the first episode released since the Welcome to Derry season 1 finale in December 2025, which has enabled the series to return to the streamer’s top 10. The new installment is set hundreds of years before the events of season 1 and tells the true story of the Indigenous Shokopiwah tribe who trapped the titular evil alien entity using the pillars from the cage he came to Earth in.
A version of this narrative is told in season 1, but the opening to “A Story of Derry” clarifies that “we hid the truth inside a gentler tale, one our children could carry. This is the story we do not teach. This is the story we left out.” The episode provides more insight into the origins of IT, more of the tribe’s history with the entity (which they call Kollu), and Maturin the Turtle.
From the Welcome to Derry season 1 cast, Kiawentiio reprises the role of Necani, along with Morningstar Angeline as Sesqui, Isabel DeRoy-Olson as Kino, Michael Podemski-Bedard as Maneese, Brandon Oaks as Apto, Jennifer Podemski as Miko, Brenda Odjick as Nebowsit, and Erik Trask as Priest, while Dark Winds star Zahn McClarnon joins the series as an important new character.

The surprise episode helps ease the wait for Welcome to Derry season 2, which is halfway through being written and has a production schedule, according to an October update from showrunner Brad Caleb Kane. Other than still being set in Derry and Bill Skarsgård playing the eponymous character in its Pennywise form, though, season 2 will be very different from what has come before, beginning with the fact that it will be set in 1935 during the Great Depression with an almost entirely new cast.
Season 2 will expand on the events of the Bradley Gang Massacre, with Kane teasing that it will be “a Warner Bros. gangster picture through the lens of Pennywise and Stephen King.” The change in time period, cast, and genre will give the show a different feel. The plan is for the third and final season of IT: Welcome to Derry to take place in 1908, when the Kitchener Ironworks explosion occurs, and in the show’s lore, when the alien entity begins using the Pennywise form.
All episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry are streaming on HBO Max.
